Re: AntiVirus Poll 2007

I've been with Avast4 Free Edition nearly a year. No complaints whatsoever. Very easily customized. Cohabitates nicely with Comodo 2.4 and CounterSpy 1.5.

I recently discovered that my company will reimburse for personal security software since many of us use our home pc's for business purposes. So I did what I love to do anyway, test security apps like crazy. I had to pick for my DIY high-end desktop and a low-end laptop.

I went through most of the choices in your poll. I could not test a few of them because of known software incompatibilities with other apps I needed for work. Almost every one I tested had some kind of problem. Most were small interface issues (Mcafee and CA), but a few were large (KAV and the constant DEP errors). Thank you Trueimage for saving me from those! Only one finished the week-long test I gave each without problems: Norton Internet Security 2007. Add the high ratings & review scores and I was sold. Strange how something always seems to bring me back to Norton.

Nice Poll mers2 See Profile Voted For KAV. Been using KAV for a few years now. Very happy and comfortable with KAV 6.0 and its features.

Using Trend Micro OfficeScan (part of the NeaTSuite) on my work laptop and work home PC. (As well as everyone else in the office). Trend ScanMail for Exchange, Server Protect for servers, and Sophos on the IronPort spam filter.

My second PC at home uses KAV.

Small business I support on the side uses Trend SMB product for SBS. (except one PC that still uses KAV - have a 2 year license on it)

I do not use any of the above software combo\ internet firewall products.

Currently using AVAST free on a couple PCs and SAV 10.1 on a couple others. Both seem to do well for me.

2) I continue to be surprised by the popularity of the, clearly inferior, AVG product. Largest voting percentage probably using the free offering .. so, why do you that use AVG choose it over other, clearly superior, free offerings .. like AntiVir or the AOL, Kaspersky engine, offering?
I'm really surprised myself. Over at Wilders there is a current thread where users are betting what the results line up will be for the upcoming AVComparatives tests. Avira is listed as NUMBER ONE by everyone. So, if users want a free AV obviously the best choice is aVira. I really like it. It does have some FP's (and Stephan mentions that in the Wilders thread) but if you really want FP's get Fortinet or Escan which are being tested this coming AVComparatives go-round).

But, yeah, I can't see why all these users have AVG. If you don't like aVira (what is there to dislike?) then use Avast. It is a lot better than AVG.

I voted Nod32. I use the network version on my 3 WindowsXP machines.

I usually install Avast or Avira when someone wants a reasonable free AV.

I don't like security suites. I prefer to use standalone AV and a standalone firewall.

Re: AntiVirus Poll 2007

I'm using AntiVir Premium AV. No plans to change at this point. Will see what future updates to KAV and NOD32 bring.

What can I say? The Mele20's reply was one. Astonishment for a few years on AVG on the most favorite, I share that too.

Avast is maybe the most overall protection one can get, in free or payed, it is good and solid product. Good forum too.

I though dropped my reply on Antivir, but that is just my personal choice. I rely these days not much on my email isp box's safety and have dropped that out of my decision.
The traditional AV of Avira Classic is now more appealing to me running all in sandbox.

One wonders why people keep preferring poor AVs above the one's proven beyond comparison, like NOD32, Kaspersky, Avira.
I think that every AV vendor has they own philosophy, marketing strategy and particular customer base. But some popular AV (which some people think they're inferior in terms of detection wise) such as Symantec Norton, Trend Micro, McAfee, CA eTrust, AVG, Alwil avast!, Sophos, Panda simply meet most user needs by using good overall software design aspects and great marketing strategy, that's why they're so popular in general consumer market.

Adversely, don't ask users why, you have to ask some AV that you think they're supposed to have better detection wise such as Kaspersky, NOD32, Avira, Dr.Web, BitDefender or others why, why...

- why they can't make their products popular in general consumer market?
- what they've been doing something wrong?
- they fail in marketing field?
- they're simply don't really know how to make their product popular?
- or they're simply satisfy and happy with their current position in the market?
- or other reasons?

If I remember right, according to AVG official web site, Grisoft claims that the AVG Anti-virus brand is #4 the most well known antivirus brand. I think Grisoft is doing something right and AVG Anti-virus simply meets most user needs that's why AVG is so popular.

EDIT

I've got that claim...

Millburn, N.J., 5th December 2006 - GRISOFT, the developer of AVG security software, today celebrates 15 years of innovation since its launch in 1991. During this time, GRISOFT grew from a regional company to a global Internet security leader. According to recent surveys, AVG is the fourth, most well-known brand in computer security. For the consumer and SMB markets, GRISOFT’s estimated market share is about 50 %.

So, don't know if this #4 only in the Australia or all over the world.

I have the free version of avast! on all three of my computers and am quite satisfied with the results.

Gave up on Norton recently and sold 2 copies of NAV2006 on For Sale/Wanted for $1 each including shipping.

It is interesting that three years ago, Norton had 34% of the votes with AVG second at 15%. The only significant changes since then have been Norton dropping so dramatically, AVG gaining a lot (likely at Norton's expense) and NOD32 and Avast more than doubling in popularity.

Funny. Look at the results from the AntiVirus Poll 2006. Seems like people never ever learn, going for mediocre freeware like AVG and Avast. The fan club from Avast joined in, posting to vote over here on their support forum - way to go guys! No less then a week ago you all complained Avast missed a severe outbreak, and rightly so...

One wonders why people keep preferring poor AVs above the one's proven beyond comparison, like NOD32, Kaspersky, Avira. See the extensive tests over on »www.av-comparatives.org . No wonder the web is becoming congested more and more. Most of you people go for freeware instead of quality. Sigh...so be it. Thanks for making the web a worse place year after year.
Right.

Speak for yourself please. No problems using Avast here, and it seems many others have the same experience, both with Avast and other free AV's. If you've been lured into believing "if it's free, it doesn't work", that's your problem. *sigh*

NOD32 I bought a license for my Win98SE machine to replace NAV2002 and saw a noticeable improvement in performance at the time. A few months later I bought a second license for NOD32 for my wife's new computer. I did not expect to see a difference in performance over her NAV2003 because her computer was a maxed out top of the line Dell XPS, but I was wrong. There was a noticeable improvement in performance. I have never had a problem with NOD32 on either machine. I just update them a couple of times per week and then forget them.

Very nice poll!

I use F-Secure on one computer because I received a free trial for a year. On another I use AVG Free because it seems to work best on that one, and on another I use Avast! because its incremental updates work best since the computer is on dial-up.
