F-Prot doesn't slow the system down, and the latest version updates real fast. It isn't in your face about other products, so I don't even realize it is installed unless I look for it in the system tray or it finds something.

So many security products now turn your PC into a huge billboard for all of the vendor's other products. I just want something that does what it says and does it well. This is why I like it for family systems as well. I don't want them to be bothered with prompts to buy all of this other stuff, and I know they will just ask me about it anyways. F-Prot does it job quietly.

Now, I just want them to finish up that Vista version or at least put out a beta.

For larger installations, I would like to try the new F-Prot Corporate version. It can pull updates and settings from a central server, but it is all or nothing and not quite as elegant as some of the competing products. I have no reason to believe that it wouldn't work, though.

Currently, I am using Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition for larger installations (20+ computers). It also stays out of the way and doesn't advertise for other products. The licensing setup of Corporate is not annoying and can be tracked easy enough (through the management console if all clients are installed in Managed mode). For the most part, especially for the free ones, it is simply that the most popular ones have been around longer. The newer ones will take a while to get established. They have to rely on word of mouth (or forums like this) to become recognized, since they can't afford to advertise the free ones very much. Btw, how many are aware of virusbtn.com ? The professional AV test lab in the UK. If interested in AV effectiveness register (free) for their VB100 page(s). That will read Virus Bulletin 100% Award on their site.

Normally I do not run AV software. In all my years of using various AVs I've never gotten a virus or a warning from any of them so I've decided this year to go bareback. I also don't use any 3rd party firewalls, just the built-in Windows firewall configured for no exceptions.

I use F-Secure on one computer because I received a free trial for a year. On another I use AVG Free because it seems to work best on that one, and on another I use Avast! because its incremental updates work best since the computer is on dial-up.

I think that every AV vendor has they own philosophy, marketing strategy and particular customer base. If I remember right, according to AVG official web site, Grisoft claims that the AVG Anti-virus brand is #4 the most well known antivirus brand. I think Grisoft is doing something right and AVG Anti-virus simply meets most user needs that's why AVG is so popular.

Avast is maybe the most overall protection one can get, in free or payed, it is good and solid product. Good forum too.

I though dropped my reply on Antivir, but that is just my personal choice. I rely these days not much on my email isp box's safety and have dropped that out of my decision.
