My parents are thinking of changing to Voip service but none of us have ever used it. Does anyone have this service and can tell me your experience? -- Team Discovery-Join the fight |

| reply to MysticGogeta It depends on what you want to use VoIP for. I don't use mine for anything but local calls. I use my cell for all long distance. For that reason I have no nead for an all you can use plan for $40 a month. I'm perfectly happy paying $15 for the few minutes I use. I'm even considering changing to a no minute plan ($5/month). It all depends on what you want to use it for. |

| reply to MysticGogeta My girlfriend has Vonage and it works fine. It appears plug 'n play but there are a couple things to be worked out. If you home has heavy internet use the call quality can degrade horribly. She finally got the router QOS setup and now it is clear no matter what is going on in the house. She had some issues with her fax machine but worked those out as well.
I was thinking about getting it for my parents but their home security service is balking at it. If I had cable service I would definitely go with VOIP service. |

| reply to MysticGogeta I have had Lingo since 2004 working with Roadrunner (Earthlink is the seller). After the first year the reliability is good and so is the reliability of my cable broadband. The total cost is around $25 with all the fees. There are cheaper plans ($195 for a year or $16.25/month) if you do not need the international destinations (Western Europe, Australia, etc.).
In my view the VOIP offered by Time Warner (around $40/month) is not competitive. You might as well go to POTS+DSL. |
