[HSI] nntp.charter.net messed up?

In Greer SC, for about 2 days now, I've been getting an error from my newsreader client that "Server says Authentification is required". This happened several months back too, and took over a week for the administrator to get fixed. Is anyone else having problems? The chat team know nothing about nntp; does anyone know how to contact the news admin?

I'm not sure what's causing the problem (since I don't work for HSI anymore), but there is an outage listed for it. Something about Highwinds, which is our news server I believe.

the highwinds part fits ... a tracert to nntp.charter.net goes to charter.svc.highwinds-media.com [69.28.186.121].

If I telnet in, I get
200 (newsfe06.lga) Welcome (Tornado v1.0.7) and anything except quit gives "480 Authentification Required", not what would be expected.

Thanks!

I bet you are in a new IP range block, and Charter has to tell highwinds to update.

Same problem here since Jan 30. So far I haven't talked to anyone able to help but several people willing to reset my password. Everything except nntp is working just like it should.

What password? The NNTP servers look at your IP and if your not on the list of approved ones, then they won't let you connect.

There is no password to enter.

This is why they have to forward what IP range block your on now to highland, so you can have access again.

the FAQ supports the IP block issue; I'm puzzled. Login to my router, the gateway is 75.137.96.1. Do a tracert, first few hops are
smc [192.168.0.1]
10.117.192.1
172.22.33.45
atl-edge-18.inet.qwest.net [216.206.221.149]

WhatIsMyIP.com reports Your IP Is 75.137.119.241 ... the 75.137 has been Charter's for a LONG time, it appears.

That's exactly what I told the support person. I don't think they knew how to do anything beside reset my password. Afterall, the nntp server is now saying it requires authorization. Oh, just for the record, reseting my password did not help... and nntp still isn't working as of Feb 1.

So what's the status? A few days ago I started seeing the same problem. I also live in Greer, SC. I use Thunderbird on Linux. Any attempt to get news messages brings up a window "Please enter username for news server access", then a similar one for password, then "A News NNTP error occurred: Authentication Failed".

Held for a supervisor tonight ... over 40 minutes. Finally got someone to talk to someone who understands that there is an issue with Charter IPs not being recognized by Highwinds. He said there is now a ticket open to get the problem solved. No promise of when, but he took my email address (and had me email them the results of netstat -a) and said he'll try to get back to me tomorrow whether or not it is working.

It COULD be Highwind's problem, so I don't want to blame Charter for anything other than being SLOW.

A supervisor asking for a dump from netstat -a for a authorization issue for NNTP?

Ok... and this will prove what?

Oh well, good luck getting Charter to talk to highwinds to fix the issue.

This is correct - HighWinds provides access based on your IP address. The new scopes have been active for a while now, however HighWinds failed to update their authentication list when we sent them the last update. We contacted HighWinds with the new ranges tonight, so hopefully the issue should clear up soon. If for some reason you're still having the same issue after a day or so, call back to report it in case they missed a block again.

I called Charter one week ago, gave them my IP number, and they said they would make sure Highwinds is not blocking it. Today I was finally able to access NNTP, about 2 weeks since I lost access. Do you think Charter would give any sort of refund for this lost of service?

I'm still having issues accessing the newsgroups. Are there any techs that can send bring this issue back up to Highwinds? Currently, I get no response when trying to connect to nntp.charter.net:

Pinging charter.svc.highwinds-media.com [69.28.186.121] with 32 bytes of data:
