Cable VoIP not any better.

I've had Packet 8 and my mother has Charter VoIP and Charter's quality really really sucks. She bundled and is paying $29.99 BEFORE taxes and other fees. Meanwhile I'm paying under $25 TOTAL tax and all for Packet 8. Even if Charter was the same price I would still go with Packet 8. Color me UNIMPRESSED by cable VoIP.

Well...Charter VoIP has been solid for the 1 month I've had it (knock on wood). You have to like the isolated DOCSIS channel it's on -- and at $30 it's less than half of what I was paying AT&T. So far so good.

I have followed packet-8 for quite some time now and wondered how long have you had it and have you experienced any problems with it?

I've had P8 for 3 years and find it a superbly reliable service. Just for the record today they announced a $2.00 monthly increase in pricing. Still makes it an excellent deal.
I like the feature set and the fact that I can move location and just plug it into any broadband and I'm up and running. I've used it on visits to SE Asia for a month at a time and again you just plug and play:) If I'm traveling for a week I can have all my voice mail messages sent as an mp3 attachment to my email.
Voice Quality is a smidgen below POTS, but certainly well good enough to please me. International calling rates are very competitive too.

Still even with an extra $2 it's a good deal. Funny thing is I can take my Packet 8 over to my mother's house and hook it up and it sounds better than her Charter phone service. And Charter supposedly uses some sort of dedicated line or whatever. I'd like to have that explained.

Whoa...

I guess I really don't see it.

Cable VOIP @ $30-ish a month.

Or $8.29 a month (inc all taxes/fees) through SR for me. And yeah I know some people don't like SR, but it works great for me!

If you are reallly cheap, get Skype and then the Linksys Skype to phone adapter - you'll get full VOIP for $14.95 a YEAR for outgoing calls and $30 Euro a YEAR for incomming calls... do the math!

'Glad to hear about cheaper options that are reliable too. I guess after AT&T raping me for all those years $30 looks really good. After the promo period is up I'll take a look at P8 (Skype highjacks your bandwidth for their service right?)

Corrected for you...

It's not an accurate statement to make a determination on "cable" voip service over one customer experience by one cable provider in one system, in one instance.
