| reply to manfmmd "Since we are in essence demanding an SSL connection via the EMail application, I don't believe that it can communicate unencrypted since there are no fallback settings."
That makes sense, 'cause if AT&T wants traffic encrypted it would be self-defeating to say, "Oh, go ahead and don't use encryption."
I'll keep things as they are--my system appears safe enough without the firewall, according to test; come March 30 I'll know if it all works right.
I still wonder why some of us didn't receive that email about the changes. I'm lucky I came here to see if there was a post about slow, slow KC email the other day. That's how I found out about this. |

| reply to manfmmd I got an email with a blurb about Secure Email service, in which this would be part of but it sounded more like a pay service. I sure have not received a notice that this must be done. I would think if it were a requirement that there would be many support calls when the non SSL email stopped. Personally though I think I would rather use an SSL connection. |

d_l Barsoom Premium,MVM join:2002-12-08 Reno, NV | The new servers and SSL would work on Netscape versions newer than 6.2. A reason it might not work is if you are scanning email with an antivirus program such as Norton A/V. |

I'm using Netscape 7.02 [have been for years now] and have no email scanning going on. So there must be a problem somewhere else that I'm overlooking.. I use Mailwasher but I assume it only "looks at" the mail on the server and only after I start it each time.. I know I would have to change the setting in Washer too but I wouldn't think it would stop Netscape from working on send and receive of mail if it's not running.
Any other suggestions ? |

| I'm an ole fart still using swbell.net mail or at least I think I am. My email addy is name@swbell.net...
Hope you are correct and I'm still swbell.net cause the changes will not work on my computer. Put back the old ports / nfo and it works.
Will I be forced to change?? |

| That's a $64K question. If you were using email servers without "yahoo" in the name, then you are probably a legacy (unmigrated) user. The "@domaimname" aspect is irrelevant because the old account users retained their "@domainnames" after migrating to the Yahoo servers.
There have been no email or posted announcements informing the legacy users that they will also have to switch to new secure servers. Of course, the email announcements to the AT&T-Yahoo customers haven't been common place either, so the absence of notification to the legacy customers isn't conclusive. |

| I just looked again at my present settings and the POP is pop.swbell.yahoo.com and my SMTP is mail.swbell.net.
Looks like a mixed bag but it has been working since forever..
Does the "yahoo" in the POP mean I'm using yahoo mail server for POP but swbell.net for SMTP ? |
|
d_l Barsoom Premium,MVM join:2002-12-08 Reno, NV | LOL. You are really straddling the fence there. I think you are a migrated user because you are using a yahoo server. I believe only migrated users can use those, but in the whacky world of AT&T email servers there are exceptions. |

2.) Is everyone going to have to change mail servers?

| reply to manfmmd One point that should be understood is that this change only encrypts the email in transmission, protecting your ID and password, which is useful on wireless networks. Upon arrival at Yahoo, the email is decrypted, and is likely passed along to the destination unencrypted. Email is store-n-forward technology, which means that in many cases, it is temporarily stored on a disk drive. Do you know your ISPs archival policy? In order to keep the content private, it would be necessary to encrypt the email before it is sent. Otherwise, it is potentially like a postcard, with contents available to anyone with access. Here's a link on the privacy issue. »www.pbs.org/now/shows/307/index.html |

| Just an update I e-mailed the following off.
Theres a few questions the forum has in regards to the new mail coming in now
legacy users- Do we have to change? Is everyone going to have to change mail servers? Some people use a linux extention called Stunnel I cant say I have used it for e-mail but apparently it scans for viruses and such. Are there additional settings needed and such? Will Mail through this link will still be spam and malware filtered? -- If you have a topic in the direct forum please reply to it or a post of mine, I get a notification when you do this. 2 edits | reply to jimkyle Thanks... never received that email, though. But, the last SBC Yahoo email I got was in my Web Spam folder, which I only rarely check. So it's often emptied without my seeing it.
And the accepted way to debug any send/receive issues with POP3/SMTP mail is to turn off and leave off email A/V scanning to start with. As has been mentioned above a few times, it is just extra "proxy" work for the email client and the file system's A/V will catch it.
Various A/V products are completely screwing up Vista Windows Mail in a lot of cases right now. Turning their email scanning off fixes it. -- ...Bill |
