| OK, birdy whispered rumors this morning.
Birdy said there is a buzz among some of the techs:
quote: ...that the whole network is being upgraded right now to work with the Docsis 3.0.
Hmmmmmmm ... if this has any truth in it, could this be why some have seen the high speed testing?

Also does that mean I would have to get a new modem or would my current Surfboard 5120 be upgradable to 3.0? |

It's ok not to believe, Hob. I'm just repeating whispers. I don't have my heart wrapped around any of this. |

| Just think about all the new modems that will have to be purchased / rented. I don't believe there are any DOCSIS 3.0 compliant modems currently out on the market.
When I bought a new modem a couple of years ago I made sure I had a DOCSIS 2.0 compliant modem (Linksys). If I have to buy a new modem, so be it. It's a small price to pay for more speed!

Fran Yes....I would like to know how they can get millions of modems in inventory to even start. The way it looks to me it will be years down the road. |

I can believe they are starting to upgrade towards full DOCSIS 3.0 compliance..........but that process could take years (and billion$ ) before 3.0 is system wide. Because DOCSIS 3.0 is (should be) backward compatible, not all equipment MUST be replaced at once, and new modem deployment would be the last step. |

| Some Comcast people were working on a node in my area and I stopped to talk to them. One of them was a field engineer. He said he has heard DOCSIS 3.0 being mentioned but didn't know the whole story. He did say that as of 2009 that all channels have to be digital and theoretically they could give 100mg down and 10 up. When I asked him if that could happen where I live he said it all depends on the competition. Where I live we still get the occasional moose walking down the road and no competition in sight so guess I will just have to be happy that I don't have to use dial up. |

| reply to tshirt Here's is the modem that is probably closest to DOCSIS 3.0 certification. »broadband.motorola.com/catalog/p···ctID=486 It has been used by CableLabs in several tests/demonstrations of DOCSIS 3 technologies and currently deployed by StarHub of Singapore for their pre DOCSIS 3 MaxOnline Ultimate plan (100/2). |

| reply to sortofageek Most reliable recent rumor is: "Comcastic 50 Mbps!"
Yup, that's right. Comcast is scheduled to announce their new, earth-shattering 50 Mbps "Combastic" Service.
Of course, they're really just calling it that. Just like they have their "8.8 Mbps" service that is really a 512Kbps service. They just change the name, let the marketing department spin it, and out plops the same old fecal material from the posterior orifice.
Comcast is a cruel joke. I think I'll start a 100 Mbps dial-up service. -- Brendan Getchel |

The same way they do now. They buy them cheap and from many companies or the one that will give them the cheapest deal. |
