I can believe they are starting to upgrade towards full DOCSIS 3.0 compliance..........but that process could take years (and billion$ ) before 3.0 is system wide. Because DOCSIS 3.0 is (should be) backward compatible, not all equipment MUST be replaced at once, and new modem deployment would be the last step. Why would that be the last step ?? Why would 3.0 even be implimented if no one were able to take advantage of it ?? That's not logical to me...... |

First step (for each deployment area) would be to plan and engineer any nessesary line extensions or improvements. then schedule and complete those, adding a DOCSIS 3 CMTS as it is completed. At the same time or before they must shift the DHCP and DNS to be fully IPv6 compliant (required by DOCSIS3)and change channel allocations splitting or combining nodes, etc Up until this is done CC only needs a few thousand modems for QC testing and tech training. Once customer deployment begins they may require several million modems within a couple years time (not everyone will feel the need to jump to a higher (and probably more expensive) tier at once. older 1.1 & 2.0 modem will continue to work at the lower speeds.
One major public relations problem will be the timing. Obviously, they either have to delay switchover until the vast majority of areas are ready (expensive and slow) or do it region by region, and withstand the screaming from un-upgraded areas ("I pay the same as Region X users but can't get the speeds they get............" think of the current " they got upgraded first" whining seen here everyday, times 10) once CC give the word to one or more vendors that they need a million modem by (insert date) how long do you think would it take to ramp up the factories in china, etc,. to pump them out?
The longer it takes to get to that point the more compiant designs will be available, important for CC cost control. And all through this they must continue to maintain the current system without major interruption. |

I think that's what the 16/1 (2) represents, maybe 1/2 the theoretical limits of 1.1, but as high as is practical to upgrade the plant to before going to DOCSIS 3. Why expend time and money splitting nodes and adding channels for a temporary fix, when you could work towards a long term solution? In fact filling all the channels now could cause problems when they switch as 3 uses differently allocated (wider) channels. the DOCSIS 3 workgroup(wisely) decided to avoid an interim 2.0+/2.0B half assed fix, now it is time for the ISP part of the group to push ahead and use the standard they agreed to. The other side of major providers ALL heading towards higher speeds will be a shortage of backbone, switch capacity, and server bandwidth at the content end. |

I personally have been very unhappy since I got switched over to Comcast from Timewarner. They supposedly are using the same hardware & lines that Timewarner was using in the area and just simply changed the IP's. Either way the route is now through ATT which has had notorious peering problems for my company and our Global Crossing line. I have been tracking anywhere from 6%-18% packet loss since getting switched. Primarily in our city (inner suburb of Minneapolis/St Paul), and again at the peering address between Comcast & ATT. 2 techs have admitted to me now that they are seeing this across the entire metro area on new installs to the former Time Warner area. I've also tracked this information from 3 other suburbs affected by the switchover.
If Comcast is seriously thinking about upgrading the service they need to throw down some serious $$$ to get their infrastructure in place. Aside from that they need to work on their peering issues with ATT. I have documented this loss since 10/25/06 and have complained about the service repeatedly during this time. In January I was actually told by Comcast they will not resolve the line and to cancel my service. |

| From what I inderstand(I could be wrong), the AT&T routers at the peering points are - not Comcast. They belong to AT&T and AT&T needs to un-bork them.
We here in Cali know all too well about AT&T peering. Comcast will likely be replacing equipment in your area as well(search for CRAN).
This will not happen overnight. It does take time to get things sorted out and equipment replaced.
They replaced EVERYTHING here in my market(formerly AT&T). Took 'em about a year. Kicks ass now though! -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |

The peering issue is only part of it. They are having difficulties on the inside of their own network. When they come out with their little testing device (wish I had a name for it) it only tests out to the local node. The first point of contact from the cable modem. Their problems are happening throughout the former Time Warner lines on the Comcast network. Here is an example of what I've been tracking for the last 3.5 months. This is just the last 24 hours. This is absolutely boggling the techs & the area service manager (who I just got off the phone with). I appologize ahead of time for the mess that WinMTR makes.
