[XP Pro] Windows Update KB595414 Problem

This is a new XP install, Service Pack 2 and about 62 additional updates post SP2. The problem is this one update. It arrives via the Automatic Update method. The yellow shield in the notification tray sends up a bubble saying new updates are ready to install. The update installs successfully. On the very next reboot, the same update appears again.

Going to the Windows Update site and letting it inventory the machine and then selecting "show installed updates" shows this particular update installed five consecutive times. I'm stumped. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I just searched for that update on Microsoft's site and found no such animal.
Would you be referring to KB923414, by any chance? A Server service update?

Sorry. My goof. Too many hours glued to a screen. KB905414

Security Update for Windows XP (KB905414)
A denial of service security issue has been identified that could cause the Network Manager service to stop responding on your Windows-based system. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

Re: [XP Pro] Windows Update KB595414 Problem er..KB905414

You can find some further info about it, including a manual work-around, here:

You may want to try clearing your IE cache, and removing any references to it in your Windows/Software Distribution/Downloads folder.
I would say to manually download & install it from a different Microsoft site, but given the age of it, I doubt that's any longer an option.
Maybe also disable, then re-enable Auto Updates.
Sorry, best I can suggest at the moment.

Thanks for sticking with it. I'll try your suggestions when I'm back at that machine and I'll post an update.

Re: [XP Pro] Windows Update KB595414 Problem er..KB905414

I had this same issue with a different update. If you go to the Windows Update site through IE there is a location where you can hide updates. If the update is applied but keeps showing up, just set it to be hidden...
If it actually doesn't apply you may need to take a different road...

I don't know why I didn't think of this before--
That update is available for manual download here:

Thank you all. I'm taking the day off to watch the Super Bowl. I'll give these fixes a shot next week and post the results.
