Using the .us primary domain for business.

No, I am not looking to register and or use a new domain name, but wondered about the primary .us domain name in and of itself. A few years back, I registered a .us domain name and thought I read something about it must be only for personal use--and I do.

Recently, I am seeing a lot of businesses utilizing the .us primary domain for businesses and wondered how they get away with it. Is there no ICANN policing of such registered domains? What is the law, local and international) for policing the misuse of primary domain names?

I thought I could find something on network solutions' website, but I couldn't. I was surprised that during a fient .us registration to seach for caveats that I could even register a .co.uk domain even though I am across the pond.

As far as I know, there are no restrictions on domain usage except for .edu - and even that has gotten looser over the years - and .mil.
The new .xxx domain may have restrictions but I don't really know (nor care). The .mob is supposedly for mobile-accessible sites only but doubt you'd be penalized if your .mob site is not...

IMO, there shouldn't be any restrictions on new TLDs (even though I think new TLDs are pretty much a scam). But the original restrictions should have been maintained. I think .org should be for non-profits and personal use and .edu should definitely be for accredited educational facilities only.

I'm not aware of any prohibition against using the .US TLD for business. The only restriction is the person or business entity has a US presence.

Hmm, ok. Always good to be enlightened.
