Because they're seen as the 'Disney' of videogames they came up with that convoluted 'friend code' system that only allows you to play with people you exchange a ridiculously long multi-digit code with, the exception being a few DS games where you can play with anyone, but there's no chat or any other type of communication between players-just a avatar, if that. And every time one of these FUD stories about little Timmy being sent text messages from from the 'net on his DS from some pedophile just makes Nintendo think that they're doing the right thing, even though what is being reported is about as likely as being struck by lightning.
