| [Info] New Guidelines
It looks like the Software forum is hitting a new phase, so there are some new suggested guidelines for posting
There are two extremes in the software world, on one side are the people who race to get everything new and every update, and on the other side, people who still use their very old programs happily. (And most of us fall in the middle somewhere).
Starting to see posts involving Software and Vista compatibility issues, which is why new guidelines are needed.
1- it is becoming necessary to mention your Operating System if you are asking for help with a program. There will probably be numerous things that will have compatibility problems with Vista, and probably be a good while before most get straightened out.
which leads to the second guideline 2- Please mention if an program update is ONLY for Vista compatibility. This is for those who will still continue to use a different OS. Some program updates are actual enhancements, some seem to be just bloat, and others (especially now) will be for Vista compatibility. It will make things easier for all concerned, if the updates that are only to include Vista are identified in the post. No sense in updating things if it is not needed on others systems.
3-And finally with program requests, until people in the forum get a good idea of what will work and not work, there is going to be a large grey area for very old freebies. Programs like HJSplit, Madonote, ZipFix, 1By1, just to mention a few I occasionally use. Programs like this are probably never going to be updated, and the forum is just starting the learning curve as to will they work in Vista. So another reason to mention OS. Thanks Koolman2 for suggesting that 32 or 64 bit system is also included
