Enclosed/Sealed Case?

I would like to know if there is some sort of case I can buy for a restaurant POS that is completely enclosed. The computer is in an environment where there is grease in the air and it will clog the fans and leave residue on the motherboard and components.

Is this even possible, or does it need to have airflow no matter what?

Mods: If this is more appropriate elsewhere, please move this topic. Thanks!

Re: Enclosed/Sealed Case?

Try a Mac Mini Duo--with a decent sized enclosure (2cu'?), I expect it'd do okay.

Re: Enclosed/Sealed Case?

I thought of one of those... problem is it needs to have a parallel port for the receipt printer. I'm not sure how well a USB>Parallel adapter would work in such a case.

Thin clients are best in those cases, IMHO. Not too expensive if you're not trying to do something fancy....

Or perhaps even consider some KVM cables. Place the PC somewhere better 50' away and just run the cable between A & B.

I'd be concerned over heat with that environment and an air cooled "common" pc. There's steps you can take to totally resolve this, but cost and effort considered you might end up better off just running cables or using a cheap-ish thin client and putting a server up in the office or something to that tune. I've done some thin client work in a few cases (only a few..) but at my day job we have a very dirty facility (manuf plant) and use non-sealed cages with typical Dell PCs and they do last two years or so, or some times much longer, but IMHO they are all ticking timebombs. I've seen what grease (oil) vapor mixed with dirt dust etc look like inside fried PCs. I just know that ain't no good!

I don't know about a thin client but the long cables idea is very interesting.

I could locate the PC toward the front of the restaurant, which is far from the frier and griddle. I can then use some long cables going to where the monitor is located.

I'll look into it, thanks.
