Stranded Costs

So the taxpayer-financed DSL network in South Korea is obsolete. Now that said network is going to be replaced, will the taxpayers now be compensated for the money they had to put up to pay for the old network?

Nope. They'll be taxed to provide the new infrastructure. A lot of people need to understand what they're asking for when they say that the US Govt should step forward and be more like Korea and other Asian countries. It's not free, and it's definitely not cheap. We the tax payers would pay for the planning, installation, infrastructure costs, ongoing maintenance, upgrades, and govt fat that goes along with such social programs.

If the money for the Iraq War was spent on the USA, 1/2 this country would have FIOS ($2K per person).

Why would they? They got years of good use out of it.

No. Why would they be? Does anything else with govt work any differently?

Of course, if there's any salvage value, it should go back into govt coffers.

I'll admit, I'm having a hard time thinking of one that doesn't. Maybe I should have said "most" social programs to quantify my statement.

Except that not everyone has Verizon as a service provider. Anyway, tax money could be put towards paying down our debt, or funding reasonable healthcare, or fixing our education system, or....... I'm talking about adding even more tax for the citizens. Not really what capitalism is supposed to be about

You've got to be joking me. It is really amazing how ignorant Americans are, even the ones who think they aren't the stereotypical "ignorant" American. I'm sure you wouldn't choose to live in Korea if given the opportunity to see what it is really like. Ask yourself WHY so many people in KOREA want to come to America. I don't see the reverse.

Now I have to ask, what makes you think that there are that many people in S Korea that want to come live in the states? Sounds like propaganda to me. Do you want to go live somewhere else; anyplace different - Hungary - for argument's sake? Most likely not! You'd probably be interested in a visit though, right?

It's no different for Koreans in Korea, or Japanese in Japan, Russians in Russia... Don't fool yourself by thinking that everybody is dying to get to the land of many WalMarts. It's just not true.

Well, not everyone... But certainly many more than are trying to leave here... The proof is in the puddin', son... How many Korean immigrants are on waitlists to move here? How many in America are waiting to get into Korea?

I wouldn't want to live in Hungary, it certainly is in worse shape than the United States....
