[CATV] Moxi Replacement in STL?

I posted a couple days back about the low picture quality after adding an HDTV. They gave me some kind of hard push, but nothing actually changed.

I actually called Dish today...and was thinking about going that route. To be honest, the single biggest problem right now is that we only get 2 of the 4 major networks. I find this absolutely ridiculous. However, my kids love the VOD...so I will try one more time.

Since we started using HD, our Moxi has been AWEFUL. It freezes up constantly...with one of those "bonks" then will unfreeze after 1-3 mins and go through 6-10 remote functions on its own to catch up. The HD channels have about 10-20 little hiccups in a given hour of programming...little audio screw ups, video pixelation etc... I have had to reset it about once per 4-6 hours of use. Of course the reboot process takes forever.

Anyway, I called customer service and they told me to go to the St. Louis equipment exchange and I can get a new DVR. They told me to tell them I DO NOT want the same kind of Moxi and I can get something different. She said availability was high in STL now so I should have no problems. I asked her wat choices there were and she told me its was a Motorola 6xxx something or other.

So...is this a step up or down? I have heard the 9022 is a bit better than the 9012 I have now...would that be a better choice?

What IS available in the STL market???

It sounds like you have signal issues. The MOXI will do all kinds of weird things if you are not set up correctly.

I need to know what your signal levels are on the MOXI. I can walk you through that if you want.

As far as the new DVR....around here it has all been talk. Some systems have them and some don't. I still like the MOXI menu better.

Thanks Bufftech.

Here are the stats from my Moxi. Now that I look a bit...the up power is low isnt it? I just had to reboot it again..everything was frozen again. The Charter people "checked" my system remotely, they said everything was ok.

Status : 12

Down:
Max Bandwidth: 3146
Freq: 735
Power: -1.6
S/N: 33.2

Up:
Max Bandwidth: 256
Freq: 23
Power: 24.3

This is from my cable modem:

Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Channel Id : 0
Downstream Frequency :
Downstream Modulation : QAM256
Downstream Symbol Rate : 5360537
Downstream Interleave Depth : 32
Downstream Receive Power Level : 1.7 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 33.9 dB

Upstream Lock : Locked
Upstream Channel ID : 2
Upstream Frequency :
Upstream Modulation : QPSK
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream transmit Power Level : 24.1 dBmV
Upstream Mini-Slot Size : 4

Your upstream level might seem a little low but it might be in spec for your system. The upstream rate for you is QPSK and that operates at a lower threshold so it should be okay but I still think it is low.

Would like to see it around 35. Anyway...make sure you go to the hardware stats and get the temp. Alot of MOXI issues are also from heat. Needs to be below 49 degrees C.

You wouldn't be able to get the Moxi over the counter anyway, even if you wanted it. They are designed for tech-only install. If you were to take your current DVR in, you would get the Moto 6416 (or possibly the 3416 if your area does digital simultrans).

The upstream power IS far below what Digeo says the Moxi is designed for, though that won't cause your stalling and video issues. The lower end of the upstream spec for the Moxi is 40 dbmv.

Ok...so is the 6416 a good option for me? To be honest, I have about had it with this. At the prices we pay per month, I find the service you get from Charter CS to be beyond ridiculous. I cannot tell you how many hours I have tried to get simple items addressed. One really gets the feeling like they could care less about you as a customer.

I am very greatful for the great support from folks here especially the Charter employees. Too bad you whole company cannot work in such a manner.

I went downstairs a bit ago and my clock on my Moxi was off. I thought that was a bit weird.

I turned the TV on and the channels were just cycling through and h screen was frozen...but the channel guide was cruising through at a pace I had never seen before.

I didnt want to touch it as we were recording American Idol (our one family TV activity). Once Idol was over, I unplugged the Moxi and it booted back up. The first time it booted, it just hung with color bars...but the second time was ok. The Idol was there, but it was broken up into small recorded pieces of varyiing lengths...weird.

What is REALLY weird is that now I cannot get into the menu. It just doesnt work.

The reactions to the remote are REALLY slow again...when you click on say a recorded show, it waits a full 3-5 seconds before it gives you te next menu. Then you hit "Enter" and it is another 3-5 secs before it confirms the choice.

I assume my machine is about to bite the dust??

Bit the dust? Yep looks like it.

You have the classic symptoms of motherboard failure. Usually due to heat ...but not always.... that is also why you were getting weird upstream readings....as well you probably noticed a " swooshing " sound when you had the tv turned up louder....I could go on and on. Eventually it would not have booted up.

Sorry it had to happen to ya. The only thing I can say about the new DVR is...well I don't know about it. They keep saying we are going to get them but we never do. And the one we have in the office for reference is nice but I still like the MOXI better ( when they are working)

As a service tech for Charter I really wish I could answer every phone call and go on every service call...that way I could make sure everyone was treated right. But I can't. So I go on these forums and do my part for those that need some help....and a place to vent.

Are you familiar with the standard digital box guide? If so, you should have no problem using the 6416/3416, should you get it.

I am pretty excited to get a new box. HOPEFULLY I will get a non-Moxi. I took the Moxi off tonight and hooked the cable straight to my new HDTV and I have to say even the SD looks REALLY good. What the Moxi was doing to screw the SD channels up is beyond me. The HD looked perfect.

The SD was almost unwatchable on Moxi. I am hoping this 3612 (or whatever it is) has a better analog tuner.

Will keep my fingers crossed.

The new DVR's have the "i-guide" installed on them. Unfortunately, they are not as "fluffy" as the Moxi guides. The New DVR's do store more and have a faster response time. The recording features are a little generic and seems to have more key strokes. All in all, it does seem to work faster, has more HD space, does not rely on a mac address and looks exactly like the moto's HD box. It has HDMI outputs..YAY!! I like the new box but hate the I-guide. Thats my 2 cents

Well...I have a new DVR. They gave me a DCT3400. I have to say this thing is WAY better than the Moxi. You can actually sit down and watch TV without fighting that box and rebooting it nightly.

The menu is much simpler and easy to navigate. I am a minimalist and this is much more my style than he bling, bling Moxi.

The menu is lightning fast and doesn't hang whatsoever. Have to say I am very impressed.

I wish I had this one all along.

Only downside was Charter customer service (800 number) sent me to the CS location for STL - about an hour from my house. I got there and they told me I had to go to the Illinois location well over an hour in the direction that I just came from...they were nice and credited $50 to my account for the hassle (didnt even ask for that). Plus they called ahead and had a NEW box waiting fro me when I got there.
