LinkSys PPPoE to Speedstream 4200 fails

My hardware is infuriatingly inconsistent and gets into a mode where my LinkSys BEFW11S4 router can't make a PPPoE connection to it Speedstream 4200. The router returns either one of these two messages: "Cannot connect to PPPoE server." or "Cannot get a IP address from PPPoE server."

Facts:
1. I can usually connect to the 4200 and the internet via an XP "Broadband" PPPoE WAN Miniport connection (i.e. no router). So Sympatico will say all is fine - but I need my router!

2. My older SS5360(?? - circa 2001) never had this problem with the same LinkSys router. It all started with the SS4200.

3. No port-forwarding, BitTorrent, gaming, VOIP custom settings. In fact I'm starting from a reset of both the BEFW11S4 and the SS4200.

4. Forcing bridge mode (192.168.2.1/brgmode.htm & click thru) with the SS might have helped once or twice, but the problem recurs.

5. Typical situation is: reset LinkSys, then set to PPPoE, keep alive 30sec, wireless off. Reset SS4200; and when LEDS settle, connect the Ethernet cable from LinkSys. Then I get one of the two errors listed near the top of this post.

6. Connecting directly to the SS4200 and forcing bridge mode first generally does not help.

7. Occasionally, and much to my surprise it DOES connect. If I leave it, I'm fine for a while, maybe days, but I can't live with multi-hour trial and error sessions to fix it the next time.

8. SpeedStream 4200: Config Part #: 003-y093-G05 Firmware Part #: 004-D240-A3S

What else could be the issue? MTU?(1492) Maybe some DHCP mixups as I connect from one thing to another? I have swapped out the ethernet cables. Right now I'm off to buy & try another router. Help!

whydont you just call linksys. you and another guy in here prove that things work with a direct connection to the modem. linksys and dlink for the other guy offer free support why you guys being so stubborn about getting help from the people that made the product. if you dont know how to setup prize A getting a new prize B that you still dont know how to setup isnt going to be the solution

Maybe its because the 4200 uses 192.168.2.X as an IP range and you have the Linksys as 192.168.1.1

How about giving this a try:

Have the 4200 do the PPPoE authentication
Set the router to DHCP

That's actually very bad advice. The end result is double NAT and makes port forwarding impossible. Fine for browsing the net, but for anything that requires a mapped port its a nightmare.

Set the ethernet card the default gateway to 192.168.1.1 set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 set the ip address to 192.168.1.100 or whatever you use for the last 3 digits Use the preferred dns server of 192.168.1.1 and set the dns numbers in the router. Open dns numbers are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

WRTG54GS - still have issues
Got a LinkSysWRT54GS. It can connect more often than not, but on occasion it persistently fails to connect as well. See image at top (how can I get the image to appear below?) This was not the clear result I was looking for! I will do more testing, as I really need a reliable way to establish my internet connection.

linksyssupport: Fair enough, perhaps I should call Linksys support. However. I used that router for years with an older speedstream box. It all started with the 4200. Point taken on the support, though.

andyb: Interesting idea to use 192.168.2.x rather then 1.x. I'll try it and post back.

Reimer: I did try that. I could get it to work eventually by running "ipconfig /release" before unplugging the cable from my PC to the 4200, and then attaching the Linksys (set to "obtain Ip automatically") to the 4200. I presume that otherwise the 4200 was still looking for my PC's MAC address, and did not want to deal with the LinkSys (??).

HiVolt: Yup! That's why I did not pursue that route further. I have plans to make my router more Skype friendly, so double NAT was not a good long term plan. Also the setup was not something I could easily get my wife to repeat if she needed to revive the internet connection.

My SS4200 is 192.168.2.1, my main PC is 192.168.2.2 and my WRT54G is 192.168.2.3.
DHCP (for other PCs on my LAN) starts at 192.168.2.10.
PPPoE gets done by the WRT54G.
Runs like a champ for days, even weeks, at a time.

(The reason why the main PC is hard-set to 192.168.2.2 is so I can unlock and access the SS4200 web interface.)

Thanks! If you power off the SS4200 & WRT54G and just plug'em in again does it all recover without intervention?

You point fits well with bylo's advice. However I tried the BEFW11S4 as .2.1, .2.2, and .2.10 but it did not help.

The interesting thing is that the LinkSys online help says to either set it to 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1, depending on which help document you read. All proportedly apply to the BEFW11S4. New newer doc with (WRTG54 screenshots) says to use _.2.1, which interestingly would seem to conflict with the 192.168.2.1 that the 4200 seems to want to be.

Any more insights out there on specifying _.2.1 or _.2.2 or _.1.1 for the router?

[Right now the WRTG54GS is working as .1.1 ...]

whydont you just call linksys ...... linksys ... offer free support
Well after 45 minutes on hold, with most of it being passed from dept to dept, I'm told that the only help they'll give me will cost $25 for a detailed 20-45 minute troubleshooting session - and if it fails, I still pay, and if the router has a problem it is out of warranty. I supposed I should have expected that.

I think I'll put that "free" support toward a new router instead.
