| VoIP - PAP2 users in Hong Kong? Need some assistance from users that might travel to Hong Kong and have used VoIP hardware to phone back to the U.S.
I've got an international assignment starting in about a month based in Hong Kong lasting for about a year. Details are still being out so I don't know exactly where I'll be staying just yet, but will most likely have HSI.
I'd like to be able to take my PAP2 (unlocked) and use it to call back to the U.S. to other FWD connected PAP2's if possible.
Anybody have any experience do this? | |

Somerset, NJ | You might have a problem with the PAP2 power brick, the power line voltage in HK is like in all the world, 220V, but not 110 like in US.

No need to use Vonage adaptor with a step down converter instead buy a new 220v adaptor ($5) just make sure the new power adaptor's voltage output selection options will match your vonage box (ie 12v or 5v output) and the power plug will fit your DC In jack on the Vonage box. | |

I'm not sure if it is easier, because there are more variables involved (ie the jack for the unit + the voltage output) but in some places it's a lot cheaper to buy this then buying a step down converter...however in HK I think it's just easier to buy the step down converter as their prices are quite reasonable, and if you don't speak Cantonese it can become pretty tricky trying to ask someone a bunch of complicated tech questions.

Miami Beach, FL | That isn't true. The first ata, the 186, came with a dual voltage power supply. I believe the pap2 does, too. In any case, it wouldn't be difficult to find an adapter in hong kong.

3 edits | Re: VoIP - PAP2 users in Hong Kong? PAP2T comes with auto-sensing (automatic switch) dual voltage, 100-240 V. So just a power plug adaptor for Asia (2 round prongs) would suffice.
For Pap2 there's no specification, so probably doesn't have the dual capability.
I have an AmericanTourister set. You can find easily on E-Bay at cheaper price, rather than buying one from RadioShack or Macys, or elsewhere. | |

Mine also I have unlocked dozens PAP2v1 of them and all have had 100-240VAC to 5VDC adapters. I like the PAPv1 Adapter because it can be easily converted to other plug patterns by, unclipping the US connector and clipping on the other country's connector. I believe Mouser Electronics has the the adapter clips for the other countries. The PAPV2 has a 120VAC to 12VDC. | |

| Re: VoIP - PAP2 users in Hong Kong? It depends which ata. I understand the dlink isn't shipped with a dual voltage power supply, and the person who initiated this thread has one of those. I spoke of the first ata, the 186, and the pap2, both of which are shipped with a dual voltage power supply.

Over the years, Vonage have supplied various adapters from Linksys, D-Link and Motorola, all with different capabilities and features. The PAP2v1 (as well as the PAP2T) always has come with a 110-240V universal power supply from the factory. Is it possible that Vonage may have supplied some customers with used PAP2s and non-factory 120V-only supplies. Perhaps, who knows? But it is certainly not the norm. The PAP2v2, on the other hand, comes with a single-voltage 120V PS. A lot of people confuse the two ATA versions because of their shared name, but they are completely different devices with absolutely nothing in common--not even the power supply. | |

I gave one to a friend and he just plugged into a 220VAC outlet in his house with a socket adapter and the PAP2v1 got connected/registered to some pre-configured VoSPs.
OTOH, as pointed out by DogFace05, the Linksys/Vonage PAP2v2 unit comes with a 120VAC power adapter. This power adapter looks similar to the one comes with Linksys/Vonage WRTP54G VoIP WiFi router.

| i took my voip adapter to the uk last year. used a voltage coverter and it worked-- ok. the only problem was the quality of the phone. i suppose the one problem is that the adapter is connecting to a data point located in the states... so your call is routed to the voip data point then to the pstn if your calling to the US. but what i have calling to the UK so I was actually calling people in england while i was over there-- so the voip adapter was contacting the data point in the states and then routing back to england-- so there was some quality loss. | |
