2 edits | shutting down bpl won't solve anything There is so much interference in cities now that day time standard am reception is bad, night is almost impossible, and it has been 4 years since I last receive an english station on my shortwave. Simply, technology has moved on and Ham radio is dead, and I live in Fargo and Bismarck ND. Even fm is getting to the point in this area that I cannot even get my sirius fm transmitter to work properly. Almost every frequency either has a station or bleeds from another. |

Perhaps you should go read up on how Hams are keeping pace with technology, and how they're exploiting that technology in disaster areas (Katrina mean anything?). |

You got to be kidding me... I bet it is probably a faulty streetlight or powerlines causing the problem.... I live in Northern NJ, less than 10 miles West of NYC in a region with 25,000,000 people... I don't have ANY problems with noise on the HF (shortwave) bands. I think you are having problems with something else, because what you describe isn't just because of crowded airwaves. And just for the record, only a minority of hams actually use AM on HF anymore. Most HF transmissions are SINGLE SIDEBAND (SSB) which can be either USB or LSB depending on frequency. FM is only used on the VHF/UHF bands, so stuff under ~100 miles and satellites only using FM. There are tons of HF modes like PSK31 (keyboard-to-keyboard), RTTY (original keyboard-to-keyboard), SSTV (slow scan TV), Packet Radio, IRLP, APRS (GPS linked with worldwide radio network (free text messaging)and of course CW (Morse Code). There are at least another 50 modes out there, so I'm not going to list them all. Ham Radio is by NO means just "AM Radio" like many think of it. 80% of hams probably never used AM in their ham career.

Whoever started that FUD let it die, Cell phones worked after Katrina, I know was directing about 20 construction workers down there at the time and was updated with cell phones from employees. |

Satellites. Several digital modes, some new ones developed in the past five years. Various frequency allocations from above the AM band all the way into microwave. Radio networks integrated with Internet networks (Echolink and IRLP). Software defined radios. |

Katrina came immediately to mind. But the tsunami in a little more distant history. Hams were there to help and get communications in and out.
Plenty of natural disasters have happened where hams stepped in when all other communications were down.
And I doubt your construction workers were down there in the immediate aftermath before the mobile cell sites were setup. |
