1 edit | FAQ requests to be added to the list... .
Hi guys,
If you have things to add to any of the three lists, just let me know in here and I'll repost to the list....
Just state which of the FAQs (FAQ#1/FAQ#2/FAQ#3) you want information added to and I'll take care of it.
Hopefully from there we can have a more complete Service FAQ (stuff that isn't so much related to the DSLR type FAQ questions)

1 edit | I am considering changing to Tek as my bell contract is done soon and I take a quick look in Tek's home page, but I am not able to find the package info for any of the monthly deal. I am looking for the unlimited dsl, just wondering if it come with any email account (if so, how many? and how big of size)
anywhere can get more info about Tek package? thanks.

2 edits | Re: FAQ requests to be added to the list... . 29.95 per month for residental unlimited DSL. It comes with one free email address and each one after that is $1/month up to 5 (not including the free one).
You will also need your own modem. A SpeedTouch 516 costs $99 to purchase outright or you can pay $50+10/month for 6 months for rent-to-own. There's also always the 2wire modem from Canada Computers (which also doubles as a wireless router) for about $23.
If you go inside the signup page you'll see all this (click continue: »teksavvy.com/unl_agree.asp?phone=5193601575). No you don't have to submit an order to see it.

| Re: FAQ requests to be added to the list... . Hi - I'll be switching over soon and have 3 quick questions I haven't been able to find info on.
1) Personal Webspace - I gather this is available with your DSL acc't but would like to know the size - I hope it is bigger than Sympatico's 5 meg.
2) E-mail - what is the limit to the msg size?
3) Dial-up Numbers - are these available as a dsl backup - even a fixed # of hrs would be satisfactory
thanks dav_ID -- In theory, a bumble bee cannot fly!

I can answer your questions:
1>Yes we do offer a free 5meg personal webspace if you would like it can be activated in a few minutes.
2>E-mail limit is 10megs per message
3>We can add unlimited dial-up to your account for $13.50/month or if you'd like you can also order an hourly package as well.

| Re: FAQ 1 (Basic ... Revisited) How well written! So often FAQ's have the questions but fail to give a yes/no answer that people usually want (in addition to any explanation/qualification). You made the Yes/No the first part of the answer!
Re; FAQ 2 (FAQ #2: DSL) About the link to telcodata.us et al. It was actually was you, kind Rocky, who had provided the dslreports-based link to a similar service as the telcodata.us one: »Re: Teksavvy + SpeedStream 5360
In any case the relevant link was: »/coinfo/clli/ but I'd add a notation in your FAQ to say e.g. "Malfunctioning as of Feb 2007" ... in case the telcodata.us service one day dies /and/ DSLReports gets theirs fixed.
I did email ren_kolka@DSLR (email mangled to dissuade spammers) to notify them of the bustage but have not got a reply nor is the service yet fixed. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Some general thoughts - these FAQ's are pretty technical .... which is great for the propeller-heads that post most often in this place. If you want to augment what you've got and add in some more grandma-esque FAQ's geared toward walking through someone who doesn't know about NXX's, etc that might serve you well since the low-usage (grandma-esque) customers make the margins for ya.
Some ideas of functionality-based FAQ might be: "I have no Bell telephone service but want to get DSL - how do I do this", or "I want to migrate from Rogers to TekSavvy, what equipment do I need and how do I go though the ordering & cancellation process".
From a purely TekSavvy standpoint, methinks that it would be a great FAQ-answerer to have (perhaps more as a part of your website than a FAQ, but it can be both IMO) is a chart of all 4 (columns) of - 'Peer1 over Bell phoneline' - 'Cogent over Bell phoneline' - 'Peer1 over dry-DSL' - 'Cogent over dry-DSL' and then as rows, show the monthly cost, GB usage, NNTP vs NNTP with static, etc. =-=-=-=-
There's a fair amount of nits that I observe, but that's only cuz I'm a linguistic picker of nits, some examples might be; from FAQ #3 : DRY DSL: "How do I qualify the Band Rate?" could perhaps be more clearly phrased as: "How can I find out what band rate I'm in?"
and
"What types of modems will work with Dry-DSL?" could be less ambiguous (remember the grandma-esque types!) "What types of DSL modems will work with Dry-DSL?"
Anyway, methinks that's you were not looking for that level of critiquing but just in case, that the sort of stuff I see (probably more occurrences if I actually look .
Good job on the FAQ's! | |

The charges ranges from $45 up-to $125 per incidence and it is up to the individual tech to decide how much "charge" should apply.

They will only work on it if you a) pay them a large sum of money to do so, or b) pay for their wire maintenance plan. Other than that you are free to do what you want with it.

| Re: FAQ requests to be added to the list... . If I can add to this... the hardest thing is figuring out how to pass new wiring without making your house look like it was shot at, or taken over by various vermin.
I learned the intricacies of telephone wiring in all of about 20 minutes (at the time, I also knew only the basics regarding network cabling, granted there are significant similarities). As for what I described above, I learned that after about 2-3 - years - of fiddling around. -- Windows is the virus. Linux is the vaccine, FreeBSD is the CURE

@rogers.com | The FAQs and threads mention "profiles". I have no idea what they are and what impact they have the services TS offer. Could this topic be addressed in a FAQ? (I'm currently w/ Rogers and thinking of switching.)

| Re: FAQ requests to be added to the list... . Hi Cordalok,
This thread (»TekSavvy FAQ »DSL: What are the various profiles available?) basically just shows the various options for speeds...
Generically bell gives us two different profiles to charge against... 256K service and 5Meg service, to which we pay the templated rates. What this means is regardless if we can only get a 1Meg speed we still land up having to pay the 5Meg rate to which in turn the end customer would also pay the 5Meg rates. We normally try our best to give as accurate a ballpark as possible to the individuals so as to not cause any harm in perception but it's difficult as we can only guess until which point the customer is finally on our system and being billed. From there we can tweak things but that's about it.
Feel free to PM me your phone number and complete address and I'll return a ballpark idea of possible speed.
Regards,
