Actual reason of outage

Severed cable hangs up phone service

COPLEY NEW SERVICE

Published Thursday, February 22, 2007

PEORIA - An AT&T fiber-optic cable accidentally cut near Joliet jammed phones in central Illinois Wednesday evening, officials said.

AT&T land lines and cell phones were affected, along with Nextel, Sprint, Verizon and U.S. Cellular cell phones because these companies apparently share routing lines with AT&T, local phone representatives said. The sporadic outages lasted from about 3 to 8 p.m., AT&T spokesman Chris Comes said, and stretched from the Metro East area to Joliet.

Comes said Wednesday evening he could not verify the cause of the outage.

But local law enforcement, including Peoria County Sheriff Mike McCoy and Creve Coeur Police Chief Michael Button, said they were told it was because of a cut cable in Joliet.

“Somehow a main line got cut,” Button said. “They’ve got a crew on it, and it’s supposed to be fixed relatively quickly because it’s an emergency line.”

Law enforcement reported people were able to call 911 from land lines, but not cell phones.

Re: Actual reason of outage

Probably an accidental cut when a nearby municipal electrician was blinded by the fake AT&T pink boxes.

Uh oh, the city has some 'splainin to do.

It would be ironic if it was a municipal crew that cut the cable, as is often the case with cable cuts.

Re: Actual reason of outage

Thanks for posting that video clip.

The bit where she shutdown Peoria reminded me of a sales demo back in the late 60's that I witnessed for the Series 200 computers shown in that video.

The demonstrator was asked if it wasn't dangerous to have the power button located so near other buttons on the control panel, and he explained that the power button was interlocked and the system would not actually power down as long as the O/S was loaded and running. He then said "see, watch this", and pushed the power button. Oops, guess what happened next; the room got very quiet as all the tape drives stop running, and the printers stopped printing. The really funny part was that it was not a special demo system, but a live production system.

Uhhmm...The name of the demonstrator, wasn't "Gates" was it?

Young guy, glasses, computers always seem to explode in his face during demos?

No, I think that he was still in middle school at the time. PCs, MSDOS, and even CP/M (the first O/S for which Gates/Microsoft produced software) were years in the future.
