When is enough?

Just more bad PR for the RIAA/MPAA. With all this bad PR, are artists really backing these Organizations? These groups cant be good for business. The more they try to stop file sharing. The bigger it gets. When will the artist have enough?

Really going to screw up business models for people that have wi-fi (even secured use). Now they are responsible for "everything" I know I wouldn't want to be in that business...

Also what about schools and libraries and such? Or the free wi-fi that some muni's are doing? Now the town would be responsible?

SO the "free Internet projects" would go out the window....

Not necessarily. They just need an authentication mechanism. While I don't agree with RIAA's stance based on the fact that it's logistic overkill and will cost consumers extra $$ in the end, it is possible to free projects and businesses to authenticate users. If this comes to pass, which I seriously doubt, the **AA's would still need a warrant to "legally" obtain information from such projects.

But what information would they get from a 'free project'. The fact that SOMEONE used an IP address at this point in time? When I use FREE wi-fi, I most certainly do NOT enter my name and phone number to use it. FREE = Anonymous. THAT is what terrifies the RIAA.

Free != Anonymous.

I agree, it's an extra logistical and financial headache, but it could be done. As for what the **AA's could gain with a legal search and seizure effort, they could gain the IP information assigned to you (based on your pre-established acct info [doesn't have to be a paid acct]) for specific time periods.

Ok so the free internet project where the homeless have access , what are they going ot require them to have for ID so they can track the user?

Or libraries give access to the Internet to people that don't have ID's....or to immigrants who may or may not be legal....what are they going to need....

This kind of legal BS has a chilling effect on deploying internet access to "everyone".

New CALEA rules will require every ISP, free or not, to be able to match an IP address to a real person. FCC/FBI rules start this spring, there will be no anonymous access. They are even considering requiring all ISPs to capture and store "indefinitely" all user traffic. Lots of hand wringing going on in the WISP board on this site. Could put small WISPs out of business with the stroke of a pen.

I'll assume sarcasm on your part. Homeless internet access and illegal immigrants...that's awesome.

Actually, library is relatively easy. Use their library card as an authentication token. Username/password for everyone else. Let the **AA's worry about tracking the people down (even if it's a cardboard box being used by the illegal immigrant) if they want to file suit, you just need to provide a mechanism as to who they are.
