El Cheapo

While some people are into the cheapest line available, I'm more into "Bang-for-buck".

*HERE*, at this point in time, Comcast is providing me with the most for my internet dollar.

Per month outlay is more than say, SBC/AT&T DSL, but what I get per dollar spent is WAY better than anything SBC/AT&T can dream about!

You do the math!
$52.95 - 8mbps
$14.95 - 1.5mbps(if I'm within distance limitations)

Even if I were still on the basic package @ $42.95, that is 6mbps... and I could get it!
I pay the $10.00 extra per month for 8mbps... ask anyone here - I get all of it!

DSL? Uhm, no! No Thanks!

Of course, YMMV.

That's the problem with DSL. Unless you are close, you don't even get the "up to" speeds.

I had 1.5 DSL once with VZ. I was getting 1.1 down so that is only a little over 2/3rds of what I was paying for. I still had to pay the landline.

This is the issue: it depends on the person. But, as apps require more speed I think DSL loses out in the long run.

Eventually, I really don't think Cable is going to be scared of FIOS with the new standard Cable is coming up with.

And, I really doubt FIOS is charging a real price yet just a "get onboard" price.

Not quite true I live maybe 10-12 mile from the Bell co I work out of but 1/2 mile from the RT- I have 6m speed and when testing to Atlanta (I'm in Orlando) I often get 6.25 down and 410 up.

ADSL is syncronous. The sync is what is affected by distance. If your sync is greater than the bandwidth cap then you'll get "up-to" the speeds advertised. Your speed is not variable based on distance.

Actually, ADSL = Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line

And the speed that a subscriber receives is based on the distance from a CO/RT as the signal degrades the farther it has to travel. This is the reason why when you call to order service from a company like AT&T they will let you know which speeds you "qualify" for, it's all distance based.

No. ADSL means Asymmetrical. It does not mean Asyncronous. It's confused wih ATM which is Asyncronous Transfer Mode.

Yea, it's based on the speed you can sync at. If you're 2 miles out your 1.5 won't be any more unstable than someone at 100ft.

Err no.. ADSL stands for "Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line "

The underlying data-stream protocol is in a synchronous ATM (packet) format. At the DSL access concentrator, (located in a CO or RT), the sync packets are removed and combined with other users ATM traffic, yielding Asynchronous transfer mode packets (varies with usage).

yeah if you can get the speeds. Comcast is crap in my area. Definetly not the best bang for buck and definitely not better than fiber
