Interesting side effects if RIAA gets their way

If people are held responsible for all activity from thier internet account, I see aq much bigger issue coming into play than files sharing and piracy.

If the RIAA gets their way, and people are responsible for what goes over their connection, regardless of whether or not they intend it or are aware of it, we might just well see the floodgates open up for companies and individuals to start filing anti-spam suits against trojanned PC's sending spam.

90% of the spam we get here at $Dayjob seems to come from cable modem or dsl end user boxes infected with the botnet trojan du jour. Filing suit against the users who are allowing their infected boxes to spew pump and dump stock scam spams is a REALLY tempting idea for some of us BOFH types.

The thing is, that your scenario is far more reasonable than holding a WiFi hotspot operator responsible for the content of the traffic that uses that hotspot and their Internet connection.

After all, the end user is in complete control of their own computer. They are not acting as a common carrier of any sort, much less an ISP, when it comes to their own computer.
