They don't need a REASON to increase prices!

They can increase prices, and so they will.

I'm more concerned with provider owned content, coupled with consequences of the "terrestrial loophole". It's a bad mix.

Can the news media buy the rights to news stories or market segments?

You mean:

• ABC buys exclusive rights to report White House and judicial news.
• CBS buys exclusive rights to report Pentagon and legislative news.
• NBC buys exclusive rights to report international news.
• CNN buys exclusive rights to report terrorism news.
• TWC buys exclusive rights to report weather.

Like that?
Could be interesting.

I suspect Cheney would grant exclusive White House coverage to Fox News on a no bid contract.

They are SPORTS channels! Are you saying Comcast are going tio invent some sports to show on em?

You cares who owns em as long as they show sports!

It matters who owns them, no matter whether they show sports or not. If say, Comcast (a land based provider) owns them, then they don't have to allow satellite providers (such as Dish, DirecTV) to broadcast them.

But surely you knew that Hob.

I knew that but I see Comcast owned Channels on my Direct TV system.....so where is the issue?

If the content is beamed to a bird anyway, Comcast must make the content available to other providers. But there are markets (like Philly - see JukeBoxHero See Profile's post) where regional sports networks never leave the ground. Hob, I find it really hard to believe that you don't already know this.

I've long suspected that one of Comcast's motivations for building regional CRANS is so they can exploit the "terrestrial loophole" for regional sports networks. As long as FSN travel solely on the ground over Comcast's CRAN, Comcast can keep the content from Dish and DirecTV.

Since I don't watch pro sports, is this really important?

NFL - The National Felons League.
NBA - Millionaires playing hoops.
MLB - Ridiculously overpaid Millionaires chasing a ball.
NHL - Where Violence rules (unless the NBA has a brawl).
Golf - Unless I'm playing it, that is the most boring crap to watch on the planet. "Quiet. He's at the green. Oh, beautiful shot. Right on the green. It's rolling. It's in the hole. It's in the hole.

I do watch the footy in Europe.

To those of us who don't watch sports on TV, it's not important. I shouldn't presume to speak for those who do watch sports on TV, but it seems to be the ONLY thing that is important to them.

And since the topic is sports networks, aren't they the folks who matter?

I do since I don't watch them but I end up footing a portion of the bill.

And it's a mighty big portion of your bill!
