| More Religious BS Why cant these groups be lead by Jim Jones? Religious fanatics need to be treated as a mentally ill. I'd like to know how this pack of assholes determined that the Wii is a "porn gateway". Do they even have one? I think probably not. I showed some friends the browser on the Wii over the weekend. They laughed at how difficult it is to use and hard to read. Maybe the Christian Coalition should focus more on teaching people how to be good parents instead of worrying about a phantom porn problem that doesnt exist. |

 | reply to ender7074 Yet another reactionary that didn't even check the website out. Must be fun bashing church groups who simply want to let parents know about the Wii's parental controls. |

This is exactly what they are doing. They are educating parents about the possibility of their child using the Wii to download pornography. This arms the parents with the knowledge to whatever it is they intend to do about it. This may mean they do nothing, this may mean they won't buy the Wii, or it may be that they just now know to be on the look out. I don't see how making parents aware of the possibility of getting porn on the Wii makes them assholes. -- "Padre, nobody said war was fun now bowl!" - Sherman T Potter

 | reply to ender7074 I'm just guessing here, but I'll venture to say that you DRTFA. Not only did you not read the article, but I'm going to guess that you didn't even read Karl's summary.
(They) discus the Wii (and its parental controls) with some degree of accuracy, unlike previous more inflammatory reports.
OMG, a reasonable and accurate discussion. Tehy are teh fanaticals! |

said by ender7074:Religious fanatics need to be treated as a mentally ill. And why is it, the moment that someone mentions that a group has a religious association, they are automatically deemed "mentally ill" and religious "fanatics". That's a mighty knee-jerk approach you have to the world. Given you're previous statement wishing death on people of faith, one might even classify it as, at best, fanatically anti-religious. It might even be considered sociopathic (a mental illness, by the way).
Just a thought.

difficult != impossible Besides: just because it was difficult for you to figure out doesn't mean someone with more of a clue couldn't figure it out more easily.
said by ender7074:Maybe the Christian Coalition should focus more on teaching people how to be good parents instead of worrying about a phantom porn problem that doesnt exist. Given what was posted and the page itself, that's pretty much what the group in question is trying to do. Specifically, they want to make parents aware that the Wii could be used to access inappropriate materials. Therefore, if they want to keep their kids away from such materials, they should be aware of the availability and how to use the device's parental controls.

| reply to Maxo It makes them assholes for the fear-mongering they are doing. Everything is EVIL!!! The DEVIL is in the Wii because there is an off chance that someone may see some pornography. There's a chance of that every time you surf the web. For groups like this to come out and say that the Wii is a "porn gateway" is absolutely idiotic. Parents are not going to read the article, they are going to see "porn gateway" and that's it. They are also going to see asinine articles like "The Wii's Dirty Little Secret". There is no secret there. It has web access. So do computers, cell phones, many hand held game systems, cable boxes, cash registers, ect... I don't see the smear campaign against most of those, only against the evil video games. People like this are pure idiots. They are taking their own religious fears and values and attaching them to everyone else and even to an inanimate object. They are looking for something else to blame when things go wrong. There is nothing wrong with the Wii. There is no hidden porn monster around every corner. |

MaxoYour tax dollars at work.Premium,VIP join:2002-11-04 Tallahassee, FL | You are lumping all Christian groups together and using that to blame this specific group. Can you provide links of this specific group doing any of the things you have mentioned? I know some people who happen to be black that act in disgraceful ways. Should I lump all blacks together and say they all do this or that? No. We have to take everyone based on their own personal merits, not on preconceived notions of who you think they might be. In this case we don't have an example of this group doing anything wrong except making parents aware of a possible situation they otherwise would have probably never considered. -- "Padre, nobody said war was fun now bowl!" - Sherman T Potter

 | reply to nixen I have to agree with ender. The PROBLEM is that the news station is trying to sensationalize nothing. Hell, everything with a browser can be used to view porn. My CELL PHONE can be used to view porn. Should we warn parents about the danger of their kids viewing porn on a cell phone? How about a PSP, which also has a browser, that can be used to view porn? Why aren't their big labels on those to warn parents about the dangers of porn?
Complaining that the Wii lacks a 'cyber-nanny' is fear mongering of the worst sort. And the fear mongering is supported by the right wing religious whackos. If a group IS associated with the 'christian right', then by all means, the news organization should take what they say with a grain of salt.
Remember, 90% of the world is NOT CHRISTIAN. And of the christians, only about 10% are the whack jobs who worry about porn on the Wii. The news story does an injustice for all who recognize the reality of the internet. -- Stick it to the MAN. Support your local torrent sites. However THIS article is about a Christian group who just put up a website that mentions the Wii can access the Internet (including porn) and points out that the Wii has parental controls to help curb that. Two totally different things. Ender's comments belong to a different thread... i.e. »The Wii: A Bastion Of Smut. Not this one. |

You know, if you're going to post up numbers, you might want to include a source. If you Google around, you'll find that, at least as of 2000, Christians made up a little over 33% of those signifying a religious association (Muslims comprising a little less than 20%, Hindus comprising a little more than 13%, Buddhists a little less than 6%, and other religions and belief systems (including Judaism) making up the balance.
Got these numbers from bible.ca, but I cannot verify their veracity. However, if they are accurate, they belie your "90% of the world is NOT CHRISTIAN" pronouncement. The difference between 90% and 67% is a huge discrepancy that makes the rest of your post look as made up as your statistics.
All that aside, the world religious breakdown is rather irrelevant. This is a US-based group seeking to inform US-based consumers. I can assure you that the US has a significantly greater than either 10% or 33% Christian affiliation.
Lastly, one needn't be a "whack job" Christian (or even religious) to worry about their kids viewing porn via their Wii. I gotta think that any responsible parent might have objections to having to explain "why is that man peeing on that red vinyl-clad woman while the other guy has his fist in her butt".

 | reply to karlmarx said by karlmarx:Remember, 90% of the world is NOT CHRISTIAN. And of the christians, only about 10% are the whack jobs who worry about porn on the Wii. Based on what???
Okay... so world population is roughly 6 Billion and based on your math about 600 Million are Christians. Of that 600 Million, 10% or 60 Million are Christian "whack jobs" who worry about porn on the Wii. Wow... I didn't know there were 60 Million Christian "whack jobs" who cared about porn on the Wii; who knew??? And since the U.S. makes up roughly 5.5% of the world's population that would mean there are 3.3 Million Christian "whacks jobs" in the U.S. who worry about porn on the Wii.
[sarcasm]However, since we all know that most of the Christian "whack jobs" who worry about porn on the Wii live in the U.S., maybe it's more like 40 Million Christian "whack jobs" who worry about porn on the Wii in the U.S. Hell, if that's the case, you better not piss off those 40 Million Christian "whack jobs" who worry about porn on the Wii. Because, we all know those 40 Million Christian "whack jobs" who worry about porn on the Wii are going to vote like zombies for the Republicans. Then, consider that 122 Million people voted in the 2004 Presidential election... and those 40 Million Christian "whack jobs" who worry about porn on the Wii make up one FREAKISHLY HUGE voting block.[/sarcasm]
More seriously...
»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_re···ulations seems to put the number of "Christians" in the world at over 2 Billion. That's roughly 1/3 the world's population.
»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christiani···_country seems to put the number of "Christians" in the U.S. at 236 Million or around 80% of the population.
Granted, we can argue all day long about what exactly defines a Christian and who measures up to those definitions... but that would be a futile debate. That said... claiming 90% of the world is not Christian is hogwash. If you want to throw around meaningless numbers... do it somewhere else please. |

| reply to Maxo I'm not lumping all religious groups together here, just the ones that spout FUD and other stupidity about subjects in which they know nothing. I have no problem with Christanity or 95% of the people that practice it. This is not a theological discussion. They are free to believe as they wish but they are not free to spread rumors, FUD, and basically attack something they know nothing about. If they were to actually USE the browser on the Wii, they would see that this is basically a nonissue. Now, this one group may be giving the impression that they are "trying to help" but they are still pushing the idea that the Wii is some porn machine. |
