[CT] Question re: Cox traditional phone service

I have a question re: Cox's traditional (pots?) phone service that they offer here in parts of Ct. and thought i'd take a stab at asking the question here in the hopes that someone else might have the service.

I have a friend who just got hooked up to it over the last few days in the Southington, Ct. area.

I don't live in that area and prior to that I had no idea that they even offered it, thinking they just delivered their products via cable.

Apparently this arrangement occurred which allowed them to use SNET/SBC/ATT's lines.

Anyways, she got hooked up to it and it utilizes the standard pots wall jacks and her phone service works..but for some reason her dialup internet no longer works.

Plugging her phone into the computer's phone jack gets a dialtone and apparently the modem hears one too, but it doesn't proceed any further in negotiating a connection.

I've been TRYING to get her to switch to Broadband but she's just one of these die hard "I just don't need anything more than this" fanatics.

Perhaps this issue and a "well, you just ain't gonna have nothing then" response will finally do the trick..but she's still not buying that response just yet.

What's even wackier is a relative of hers who lives with her has 15Mb Cox HSI service in the NEXT room and is willing to share it via router, but..well..you guessed it..she still just won't agree.

Anyways..what I'm wondering is whether anyone is familiar with this service from Cox..and if you ever utilized it for dialup?

If it's a simple fix i'd be willing to do it for her but I'm not going to get into more unless she agrees to go the router/hsi route. Just dropping dialup she'd pay for that flat out in 6 months for the equipment and it's stupid to not take advantage of what is already right there in her place anyway.

Thanks for any replies.
Rick

ps: I posted this here instead of the dialup forum because my question is specific to Cox and this particular pots service they have.

cox doesn't provide service over SNET/SBC/ATT's lines...

they use the Coax line feeding the house, Put up a NIU that converts the cable signal to traditional twisted pair....

That is how telephone is supplied over the existing home wiring and jacks....

As for the dialup... I have used it a few times here over my cox phone and it works fine... I connect at speeds a lot faster than I ever did with the local telephone provider...

As for suggestions.... i would say try updating the drivers for the modem... Try different phone cords from jack to PC..

Also does she have different access numbers she can try?

Do you have a modem in the house? It might say Arris Touchstone on the front.

All things being equal, you may need to call into your local office and have "reverse tone detection" turned on.

Good luck

Ok. That makes more sense to me then as to how they're supplying their phone service in this manner.

Your phone cord suggestion was tried with no better results. And, i'm sure the connection is there because plugging a regular phone into the back of the pc in addition to having the regular line from the pc's modem to the wall establishes a good phone connection.

As far as the drivers, I can look into that. It's an old pc though. Strange this was just working though on the at&t line but not with this one.

There just must be something different there with their setup preventing this.

It act likes it hears the dialtone because when the line is unplugged..the computer says there is no dialtone..
but connecting it goes no further than it dialing in and then just sitting there unanswered.

This was also tried using different access numbers in different cities even (netzero)..with the same results.

Anyways..any further comments from anyone or ideas is appreciated.

Honestly, I think it's people like this that will keep the dialup business going for a long time to come.

What the attraction is here for her is just a real mystery, especially seeing that 15Mb cable hsi is right there already in the house..and would let her even save on this bill, as small as it is.

Yup. Have reverse tone detection turned on. Should clear up promptly

Thanks to all for the suggesion. I've passed it along and suggested they call Cox to insure that is turned on.
