It sounds to me like

the hard work they are referring mostly to is how they will get former adelphia customers paying as much as TW customers are.

Perhaps they should have done it like Comcast did to us when we were transitioned from adelphia a couple months ago.

Send us a hi, welcome to Comcast letter..along with a price increase letter that took effect on day one.

Welcome to Comcast.

The only thing that will keep this in check is competition.
Verizon and their FIOS service is that and as people clearly see, when that becomes a choice people have, The cable co's respond.

Sadly, for those of us in AT&T land however, I think the cable co's laugh at them. There is no fear of Uverse.
According to a recent story, uverse has 7000 customers out of 2.2 million homes passed with the service.

Would you fear that if you were them?

The cable co's, for the most part, don't respond to nor compete with the slower DSL offerings at all. Apparently they see no need to do that either.

In some respect, I feel sorry for the telco's. They have such a huge problem on their hands with all this old copper making up virtually everything their networks are.
Verizon, to their huge credit..saw this problem and responded by saying to their shareholders FTTH is what we must do if we're going to compete and survive.

AT&T, on the other hand, chose a different route. One of lawsuits and trying to do things only part way, in the hopes of saving money and appeasing their shareholders.

7000 customers to date..out of 2.2 million homes passed is the latest result apparently from that effort.

Assuming those #'s are accurate, I think it's pretty safe to say that Uverse won't make it. And AT&T just might be digging their own grave if they don't quickly find a way to make things happen.

Why do I care? And why should you care?
Because Time Warner and all these Cable co's all have a lot of heavy lifting to do in the future.
And won't stop doing it.

And what that heavy lifting is, is raising prices across the board, any chance they get.

The telco's would do the same if in their shoes and neither one are any saints when it comes to we..the consumers. But what they do recognize and respond to is when both are in the ring doing battle with one another.

That's how we all, as consumers..come out ahead.

Verizon must continue full steam ahead with their fios rollout.

And AT&T must change and adopt verizons strategy.

It's the only answer.

I wish you were in an Adelphia area right now with a comment like that. You don't know high cable rates unless you lived there. Consider what you're paying now, +$10, without VOD, and an extremely limited HD lineup. Consider 4Mbps downstream for as much as you are paying right now for 6Mbps. That is the Adelphia world, and customers are more than happy to know they were bought out. 10 out of 10 customers I speak to say "it's about time they got bought out, they're rediculous".

FIOS isn't gonna be that cheap forever

When the almighty FIOS is everywhere in VZ territories (worth having that is), I can guarantee those prices are going through the roof for HSI and TV. In FIOS land, the phone is just the 3rd part of the triple play or the 4th part of the quadruple play.

20/5 speeds? $39-49 now. About $69 in a year or two.

VZ is going to have raise prices on TV and HSI eventually to satisfy investors. Then, I doubt many people will be griping about the $44.95 plan for 12/1 on Comcast.

My area was an adelphia area until 2 mos. ago.

I know them well.

When we were transitioned, Comcast did not raise us to 6Mb. They kept it at 4Mb, where it remains today.

The only reason I wound up with more was because I had to call in and upgrade my tier..and pay more..for the 8Mb comcast tier.

Comcast also raised prices for TV service on day one as well.
My TV service went up about 8% the day they took over from what adelphia charged us.

Overall, comcasts acquisition of adelphia here did nothing but raise prices. It did allow us to upgrade to higher HSI speeds, but obviously at a cost as well.

Had AT&T been here with FTTH, none of this would have happened.

Comcast owns this area, and many others..and they know it.

Time Warner in Austin is scared of U-Verse. The very first SWBT manager I had in 1996 retired and went to work for TWC in sales. Saw him last week at a 30 year service anniversary luncheon and he told us U-Verse is all they talk about. But they figure they won't feel the heat for about 2 years.

They have yet to market at 2.2 million home, but they have the ability to market to 2.2 million homes at this point. When they had 3000 users they were marketing to 30,000 homes. THe real question is how many are they marketing to now that they have 7000 users and growing...

Stella, what plan are you on? Comcasts 8000/768 or did you previously have adelphia's 6000/768k plan?

I suspect that those on adelphia's old 6000k plan just stayed there in the conversion, the same as those of us who had the 4Mb. The only way I got higher speeds was to call comcast and upgrade to their 8000/768k plan.

As far as my speeds go, 90% of the time I'm on the net it's at off peak hours...very early morning and through the daytime. During those times my speeds generally run from 8000k up to 19,000 and even 20,000k.

While I'm not really the best judge of it due to my limited usage during prime time hours, I do agree that there is a problem here in Waterbury. During those hours I have seen #'s like you're reporting you have, and even worse at times.

The same thing sometimes occurs on weekends as well. I just ran a few tests and saw from about 3500k to 8000k.

Still though, for me, it's no big deal really because my usage weekends is just as limited and those speeds are fine for me.

Your test above indicates it was taken at 11:30 at night.
That would seem to me to be low for those hours compared to what I've ever seen.
I'd normally be back up into the 8000k + speeds at that hour although again, I'm not on much around that time to really ever have watched it.

For what it's worth, here's what I suspect is going on.
Before, we all had fixed caps of 4000 or 6000k.
Then, after we transitioned, most were kept at those caps except those with 6000k then got powerboost. Others like myself then upgraded to Comcasts 8Mb tier.

I don't think their network here in this area was ready for that. As you know, it was always solid as a rock with adelphia always delivering exactly what we paid for but this whole powerboost bursts in some areas at some times of the day is pushing it over the limits.

If you look even at tracerts, you'll see that the routing is nowhere near what it should be and we're being routed to 10 places in Ct. just to get out of the state.

This transition is far from complete and is a work in progress.

If you are a user who primarily uses your connection during primetime, I can sympathize with you. 3000k is hardly what you expect to receive or are paying for...if that's the norm for you.

One thing that gives me encouragement though is the same people who gave us great adelphia service are still here in this area. It's just a new name. And, I suspect that whatever lingering issues there are will soon be resolved.

The answer is probably that they need more bandwidth to meet the needs of powerboost and that does take some time to get installed and everyone configured properly.
One thing in our favor is you KNOW they want to soon offer phone service like everywhere else and to do that they'll need to make sure everything is completely up to speed at all hours.

Overall, I'm not trying to make excuses for them. It's just that I do understand that their first priority was getting everyone switched over. They bought our accounts from the Bk adelphia and that had to happen quickly after that. And again, I just really don't see what you see for the most part, but it's probably just because the hours I'm usually online and using the service.
And then, it's generally very good.
