Vista, IE7, Office 2007 Banned by US DOT & FAA

From InformationWeek
quote:
Tens of thousands of federal workers are prohibited from upgrading to the latest versions, according to memos seen by InformationWeek.

Citing concerns over cost and compatibility, the top technology official at the federal Department of Transportation has placed a moratorium on all in-house computer upgrades to Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating system, as well as Internet Explorer 7 and Office 2007, according to a memo obtained Friday by InformationWeek.

[DOT chief technology officer] Schmidt says the Transportation Department hasn't ruled out upgrading its computers to Windows Vista if all of its concerns about the new operating system -- the business version of which was launched late last year -- can be resolved. "We have more confidence in Microsoft than we would have 10 years ago," says Schmidt. "But it always makes sense to look at the security implications, the value back to the customer, and those kind of issues."

Among the options the Transportation Department is weighing as a possible alternative or complement to Windows Vista are Novell's Suse Linux and, for a limited group of users, Apple's Macintosh hardware and software, he says.

The DOT's ban on Vista, Internet Explorer 7, and Office 2007 applies to 15,000 computer users at DOT proper who are currently running the Windows XP Professional operating system. The memo indicates that a similar ban is in effect at the Federal Aviation Administration, which has 45,000 desktop users.

We have a US government contract at work where we must interact with the agency using the web. Similar to the article above, this agency doesn't support IE7 yet either. Which is ok with me because that's the only site we use IE6 for. All else is Firefox...

I am using IE7 and am not all that happy with it, but I am not a Government agency, so the sites that I cannot get are not all that critical to me. However, with IE7 and the other items mentioned, I can see what there has been a ban for upgrades. Why MS would do what they have done, leaving many to have to wait for the rest of the world to catch up with it, might be smart for MS, but it leaves the rest of us whirling. We are caught in flux...unable to really go forward for so called better things.

I have a customer using a business critical image workflow application that also breaks with IE7 and may break on the next server version. Since it's a six figure conversion/migration to make it work, XP, WIN2K3 server and IE6 are there for the duration.

Of course the application vendor says it's Microsoft's fault, and Microsoft points back at the vendor. No matter who's "right", the customer is stuck.

We're not currently using, and have no plans to implement, either IE7 or Vista. Have had some users sniffing around asking about it, though...

Intel for now has put the brakes on upgrading to Vista.
quote:
"I know of no organisation (sic) doing an upgrade before [Service Pack 1]," Paul Otellini told attendees of the Bank of America Technology Conference held in San Francisco this week, according to a ZDnet blog. "Intel isn't upgrading either."

I "have" IE 7... but I run SlimBrowser overtop of it!
SB works and acts just as it has for years on IE 6.

Only reason I have the IE 7 icon visible, is for the Yahoo toolbar's PestPartol scanner!
SB doesn't allow toolbars...

I don't know why anybody in a business environment would be eager to upgrade to Windows Vista at this point, unless the IT department just wants job security in fixing a lot of new problems.

I don't find this odd. Vista/IE7/Office 2007 are new and there are some compatibility issues...it would cost a fortune to upgrade, and there probably is really no need to do so at this point in time.

FAA May Ditch Vista & Office for Google & Linux Permanently

From Information Week:
quote:
Days after InformationWeek reported that the Department of Transportation has placed a moratorium on upgrades to Windows Vista, Office 2007, and Internet Explorer 7, the top technology official at the Federal Aviation Administration revealed that he is considering a permanent ban on the Microsoft software in favor of a combination of Google's new online business applications running on Linux-based hardware.

[FAA chief information officer David Bowen] said he's in talks with the aviation safety agency's main hardware supplier, Dell Computer, to determine if it could deliver Linux-based computers capable of accessing Google Apps through a non-Microsoft browser once the FAA's XP-based computers pass their shelf life.

Because of Google Apps' sudden entry into the desktop productivity market, what once would have been a routine decision at the FAA to eventually upgrade to Microsoft's latest software is now firmly up in the air. With similar debates doubtless playing out at other government agencies -- and in the private sector -- Microsoft is going to have to work a lot harder than in past years convincing customers to follow its well worn path of new releases and follow-on patches.

Re: Vista, IE7, Office 2007 Banned by US DOT & FAA

Yeah we have one Vista machine setup for the QA people, everything we run tests fine, with one crucial ODBC component that IBM has said will not be updated until July. So no need to move forward on that.

IE 6 and 7 are both acceptable here, I encourage people to move to 7 as it has been (THUS FAR) more secure. I use FF myself (except on a couple sites that only take IE) and alternative browsers are allowed by our company. So we will not be forcing an upgrade to IE7 anytime soon.

Office 07 offers features (in Excel) that we need, so we will be moving to it. Been using since Beta, and finally find myself more comfortable with it. I really like the features it has, but boy - what a curve. Feels like 1996-97 all over again...

Baseline in our Agency currently includes WinXP, Office 2k3, IE6...

We have several mission-critical apps that IE7 breaks (not sure why) and we got an E-mail from the CIO shop prohibiting updates to IE7... Then a couple of weeks ago, we got another e-mail prohibiting the acquisition and/or installation of Vista on any computer on our enterprise...

I'm sorry... We're currently experiencing an interruption in service...

Add NIST to the list of naysayers

Looks like the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has also balked on Vista. See This Information Week article.

The article doesn't provide specific reasons for the ban, but, according to the article, NIST IT people will attend a "Windows Vista Security" session to discuss the unspecified issues.

That doesn't necessarily translate into security vulnerabilities, since Vista security implementations may break applications. However, it does point out the need to examine existing systems carefully before hopping on a bandwagon that may take implementers into a swamp full of compatibility alligators.

From a competitive perspective, the quandary faced by some IT managers when faced with a Vista migration and the planned and recent obsolescence of XP and Windows 2K respectively is leading them to consider other courses of action;
said by article :

FAA CIO Dave Bowen told InformationWeek that he may forego upgrading the aviation safety agency's computers to Microsoft's latest offerings in favor of desktops running some combination of Linux and Google Apps, Google's new online suite of office productivity tools.

For Linux fans, this piece is good news. Such decisions may drive further development of Linux Desktops that are simpler to install, customize, maintain, patch and upgrade in commercial and SOHO environments.

Maybe they should use alternate browsers?

Update on NIST and Vista

NIST's first priority is securing its present laptop systems with encryption. After that? Well, we'll see.

(NIST CIO Simon)Szykman said tech staffers at the agency, which is tasked with recommending computer technology and policies to other government agencies, will test Windows Vista to ensure the OS is secure and fully interoperable with other systems and applications used by NIST. If it passes, "there is no reason to believe we would not deploy Windows Vista," said Szykman in a telephone interview Wednesday.
At least they're evaluating and upgrading in an orderly process. But then. they're the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the one who should be setting the standards.
