I used to have a Shoutcast radio station for about 20-30 listeners broadcasting rock. It was pretty cool to be able to broadcast to others, but illegal. If you broadcast using your home broadband connection to a Shoutcast server in a foreign country, you are pretty much undetectable. That is what people are going to be doing.... Just look at the Shoutcast forums. Good time to get into the Shoutcast Server business overseas.
What's weird is my now defunct "radio station" was "recreated" by someone... Same name and slogan. I just found out about this last night, when I was looking up the domain to see if anyone purchased it... How weird.

But for those webradios with advertising revenues, the RIAA only have to verify the address where the cheque is being sent to... They probably won't be able to shut down your out-of-US shoutcast server, but they'll know where to shut down the source and make you pay.
About the new RIAA scheme, if your US-based station plays, example, "Japanese Pop" or songs where the artists/labels are definately not american, can you be exempt from paying royaltees for these songs? After all, those artists will NEVER see a dime from the RIAA. |
