[DVR] Motorola 6412 Barely functional (Bethlehem, PA)

Ok, this DVR or cable company (or both) is a disaster and I hope someone could help me understand what is happening.

Using my cable line directly into the T.V. all the channels show up perfectly, no glitches no blackouts. However, my HDTV only has analogue TV inputs, so I don't recieve digital channels.

The problem is the DVR, when I go to channels 3-6 and 10 (and some others) there is no signal at all. Not a thing, even after reboot (many of them). Then when I go to channels 69 (Disc) and 70 (History) those go in and out. After about a minute of watching them it stops, get glitchy, has no sound then after 3-5 seconds it comes back.

Today, I was trying to watch channel 79 (Comedy Central) and out of nowhere is just dies, I get nothing. So just for fun I go to 979 to see what I get. I get Comedy Central but after 10 minutes I get no audio.

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

BTW: HDTV channels don't really have any issues.

If you have a HDTV that accepts Coax input...and has a digital tuner (most do) it will pick up digital channels.

Anyways, reboot the box. Hold down Power on the front of the DVR for 5 secs until the screen says "b00t". Then release. Wait until the time sets itself (1-2mins) and then power on the box with the remote (press CBL).

The problem may be fixed. RCN is aware of the issue. Call up tech support. They may have to swap your box. Rebooting has worked for 2 out of 3 people that have asked me about this issue.

No, mine doesn't have a digital tuner. I would have had to pay $400 extra dollars for that model.

I did mention that in the original post, however it was buried in the middle of it, so that is why you might have missed it. I have rebooted, many many many times. Both by pressing the power button until boot thing shows up, and by unplugging it.

Do you know if this problem is on RCN broadcast side or is it a DVR problem mostly. Thanks for the advice, I will give them a call later.

I'm not having your problem...but I am having an issue...

your best bet is to keep complaining to the tech support people.

RCN needs to A) Go back to previous Passport software. or B) Go back to iGuide.

SecTV went back to iGuide from Passport because Passport just doesn't have their stuff together.

Also, you can try one more thing. It will CLEAR THE ENTIRE hard drive and REDOWNLOAD THE SOFTWARE. Which will take 45 mins.

So if you don't have anything DVRed and want to try it, give it a shot:
1. DCT6412 (or 6416) should be turned on
2. Press Cable, (turns Power off), Select, Select to bring up Diagnostics Page
3. With diagnostics page showing press Replay, DVR, DVR, DVR, Live (or Replay, LIST, LIST, LIST, Live - depending what remote you may have)
4. Box should show "Clr" in the LED display.
5. Press Select to proceed with the reset (or Exit to cancel).
6. The DVR should now reset and redownload the software from the head end. This can take 45mins +

Issues that I have had:
DVR doesn't record shows for my wife that she schedules on DIY channel. The recording shows up in the list but you can't watch them.
Watching HDTV and using the guide is so painfully slow it is not worth trying.
I have had brief drop outs of audio watching different channels.

I have already just unplugged my box from A/C power but that didn't seem to help.

I also have the 6412 Phase I box.

Unfortunately this did not help (thanks for the idea though). Next I am going to try new cables just in case. I already swapped cables but they were from the same batch. Will post back with results.

Well, I'm having trouble too. Although my problems didn't arise until a week or so after the upgrade.

There is definately a problem with the "Updated" software that was pushed a few weeks back.

RCN has been suspiciously quiet about it too. Usually Joe or Jim post, but they've been absolutely silent on this issue.

I'm gonna call RCN tomorrow and ask for a 1 month credit on my account because it's a nightmare to watch TV 'normally' the past 2 weeks, and I bet it's going to be a while until a real fix is pushed out.
