[General] Looking for new service

Well I am looking to get VOIP service and am looking at some choices. I was looking at Vonage but dropped them off the list. In all cases I am looking at the 500 minute plans as I do not use my home phone much but want to maintain the number.

The three I am looking at are Quantumvoice, ViaTalk, and SunRocket. I like the pricing of Quantumvoice as it includes all the taxes and fees, and I can bring my own adapter to save money on the startup fees (If I can find one really cheap).
ViaTalk gives $25 off their fees with the 'DSLREPORTS' coupon code and has decent rates as well.
SunRocket has good rate but I can't see anything about the taxes and fees being included or not.

So what is the concensus on these three providers?
Besides FleaBay, anyone know where I can get a cheap device that works with them, preferably all in case I want to switch?

Thanks!

as you are trying to base your decision on the basis of startup costs and whether taxes are bundled into the price, I would respectfully suggest that you not do VOIP at all. You have neglected to mention service quality, customer support responsiveness, reliability, features, number portability, early termination penalties, and every other decision criteria in the consumer VOIP space. The vast majority of disappointments with consumer VOIP providers has to do with the functionality not with the cost. You will be doomed to be unpleasantly surprised or disappointed with the service regardless of provider. You will become "churn." Do everyone a favor, including yourself, avoid the drama and stay on Bell service.

I respectfully disagree with Rocky. I recommend VoicePulse. I have been with them for two years and have no complaints.

Rocky, wow, how irrelevant.

It's funny how some people in forums like to post whatever they want to even if it isn't an answer to the question or information posted. I have done my homework and read all the reviews and opinions out here and elsewhere and am down to the three services mentioned and if you ACTUALLY READ the post before spouting off crap you will see I am askign opinions on these three providers, not just billing and rates. Moron.

If you had nothing to address the specific questions, don't answer.

As many of us BBR regulars have respectfully suggested in the past --- please don't start another thread of "Which VOIP should I choose?" The answers and opinions have been posted over and over and over. Just check out »/gbu for the answers you seek. Then, if you have specific concerns, let us know. (I'm not trying to be mean-spirited. And it's just my personal plea. It's just that we get this question a million times an hour or at least once each week, whichever comes first.)

By the way mt_100, I disagree with your reply to RockyBB. You may have asked about only three providers, but the post just after Rocky's promotes a fourth option --- and this is exactly what will happen as others chime in with a fifth and sixth......

Moreover, you didn't ask questions. You presented your conclusions regarding the various providers' features and pricing. The USF charges for SunRocket appear on their site.

Not a problem.

Does anyone know if ViaTalk and SunRocket are flat monthly fee or if there are taxes and fees on top of the monthly rate?

I can't speak to SR as I do not have their service, but ViaTalk charges a flat fee of $2.50 per month to cover all the extra fees (E911, etc).

Come on now! This information is clearly delineated on those providers' websites --- and, if you had read the information, you would have seen that they both have flat monthly rates and flat annual rates! ANd the taxes and fees are mentioned as well.

MODERATOR: Please lock this inane thread.

Re: [General] Looking for new service

Looks like you need the phone only for some infrequent calls. I would recommend you going with a pay-as-you-go provider like VoiceStick who offer free incoming, free DID in your area code of choice and 2cents per minute outgoing. Worst case, you use up 500 minutes, you are out $10.

I've used all three and IMHO, QuantumVoice is the better option, specially now that things are back to normal after DigitalRealm, Inc. took over and cleaned up the mess left by AMS.

I'd ping and run traceroutes to their respective servers and be inclined to choose whomever has the lowest consistent pings and least hops.

And what if you choose the major portion of voip providers that negotiate your RTP traffic between you and the gateway directly and it doesn't go through their servers? Then, it doesn't matter if their respective servers happen to be in your living room or on the other side of the country. Later... Mike...
