[General] Magicjack

Anyone have comments on Magicjack? Looks like an ATA just built into an USB device. Looks like a year of service is about $20, and you buy the adapter for about $30. Service is unlimited in USA & Canada, and even parts of Europe.

The investors in this company just bought SJ Labs, so they seem serious enough to suceed.

 Re: [General] Magicjack

A link would be nice. The name finds email addresses like that mostly.

Could not find it here »www.sjlabs.com/index.html either

Taking a look at it now on the site. It seems like a nice little device.

From the pictures it looks self powered. How great would it be if you could actually have a device plug in any computer with a broadband connection. Would 801.1G connection give enough throughput? You could use your phone with your notebook at any hotspot easily.

Herb Greenberg, a financial guy did a story on this and said he hooked it up instantly. I wonder what drivers it needs, and if any need installing? (lets assume WINXP) If the device really can sell for about $50 with a year of service and phone number with it, now you are talking a nice gift for someone. The venture is private. I know Skype is around, but this seems much simpler, and simplicity is why I went with Sunrocket. SR, one $200 bill per year, imagine getting the same service for $30 a year. They mention parts of Europe are free.

To access this MagicJack site, your browser needs a flash. OTOH, the other MagicJack (.net) is a homepage of Captain Jack's Web Site!

Honestly, I will no longer invest my $$ on any USB ATA since I have managed to get some ATA units, i.e. Linksys PAP2, very inexpensive. OTOH, the audio quality on any USB ATA really depends on the state of your computer and that is not acceptable to me, YMMV.

If you really want to be able to use a VoIP on WiFi hotspots, your best solution is to get a WiFi phone. The other option is to buy a very inexpensive WiFi router supported by some open-source firmware to run DD-WRT, configure with WDS, and attach a SIP ATA with some (cordless) phone. The whole system can be mounted in your car and all you need is to park your car near by a WiFi hotspot to access the Internet and carry the cordless phone within the range.

Herb Greenberg, a financial guy did a story on this and said he hooked it up instantly.
Can you please provide the link for us to follow up and read?

AFAIC, this kind of offer is not a good idea to have because the device will be locked and tied to their service unless it is sold for less than $10 for us to hack/unlock, YMMV.

Nice idea but I dont want my phone dependent upon a stick stuck into my computer AND I dont want to have my computer on ALL the time to have phone service (i.e., skype).

It says that it will do call forwarding and find me. I bet they charge for these services. As in, free to your computer but charge to the find me/forwarding numbers.

We'll see....

The concept sound interesting, but without the details I don't know how good the service will be. I'm willing to try it out, but it's not available until sometime in April.

Ok, it seems to be a USB analog telephone adapter with a ROM or FlashMemory that contains the softphone. That seems far from revolutionary, new or even worth noticing for me. USB phone adapters have been around for a while.

I think the announcement was for April 07 meaning 2007, not April 7th. A little bit confusing...

We are just going to have to wait until magicJack goes on sale to find out all the details. For example, can I get my phone number switched over to the new service or am I stuck with some new number or some number outside of my area code?

Will the magicJack service really have a clearer voice quality than say Skype?

I understand magicJack partner is YMax Communications Corp. which has a network covering most of the USA and is a certified competitive local exchange carrier with interconnect agreements with other carriers.

I hope magicJack is the real deal and will open for business soon. I have high hopes for great dirt cheap prices with solid service.

I notice the site »www.magicjack.com is down right now.
Perhaps the site will be updated or maybe magicJack was forced to shut down because of possible patent issues?

I'm shocked if they went this far to back down now. Maybe the site will be up again soon and will open for business.

I hate to think MagicJack might of been forced to close due to possible legal problems.

Well, today is April 30th and »www.magicjack.com is saying online sales in April'07. So, I called the 888 customer service number I found doing a Google search and received an answering machine that said Peter Russo and said to leave a message. So, I just hung up without leaving a message since magicJack is obviously not ready for business.

Anyone have any information about what is going on please post the information here. Thanks!

your eagerness to give Magicjack your money is a bit puzzling. normally one jumps on a bandwagon ... Magicjack doesn't seem to have a band, much less a wagon. Do you simply want to be customer #1? If so, that's fine, but you might do well to use this delay to get one of those temporary credit card numbers so a few months from now we all won't have to hear about how Magicjack continues to bill you after you've tried to cancel.

LOL RockyBB I'm more interested in getting information rather than jumping on possible vaporware!

I did try to send an e-mail for information as the website does have a Contact Us link. Here is the reply
"This recipient e-mail address was not found in the recipient e-mail system. Microsoft Exchange will not try to redeliver this message for you. Please check the recipient e-mail address and try resending this message, or provide the following diagnostic text to your system administrator."

Not a good sign! The information I gathered indicates a possible vaporware product. I'm not jumping on the empty wagon.
