[General] Magicjack

Anyone have comments on Magicjack? Looks like an ATA just built into an USB device. Looks like a year of service is about $20, and you buy the adapter for about $30. Service is unlimited in USA & Canada, and even parts of Europe.

The investors in this company just bought SJ Labs, so they seem serious enough to suceed.

A link would be nice. The name finds email addresses like that mostly.

Could not find it here »www.sjlabs.com/index.html either

To access this MagicJack site, your browser needs a flash. OTOH, the other MagicJack (.net) is a homepage of Captain Jack's Web Site!

Re: [General] Magicjack

From the pictures it looks self powered. How great would it be if you could actually have a device plug in any computer with a broadband connection. Would 801.1G connection give enough throughput? You could use your phone with your notebook at any hotspot easily.

Herb Greenberg, a financial guy did a story on this and said he hooked it up instantly. I wonder what drivers it needs, and if any need installing? (lets assume WINXP) If the device really can sell for about $50 with a year of service and phone number with it, now you are talking a nice gift for someone. The venture is private. I know Skype is around, but this seems much simpler, and simplicity is why I went with Sunrocket. SR, one $200 bill per year, imagine getting the same service for $30 a year. They mention parts of Europe are free.

Honestly, I will no longer invest my $$ on any USB ATA since I have managed to get some ATA units, i.e. Linksys PAP2, very inexpensive. OTOH, the audio quality on any USB ATA really depends on the state of your computer and that is not acceptable to me, YMMV.

If you really want to be able to use a VoIP on WiFi hotspots, your best solution is to get a WiFi phone. The other option is to buy a very inexpensive WiFi router supported by some open-source firmware to run DD-WRT, configure with WDS, and attach a SIP ATA with some (cordless) phone. The whole system can be mounted in your car and all you need is to park your car near by a WiFi hotspot to access the Internet and carry the cordless phone within the range.

Herb Greenberg, a financial guy did a story on this and said he hooked it up instantly.
Can you please provide the link for us to follow up and read?

AFAIC, this kind of offer is not a good idea to have because the device will be locked and tied to their service unless it is sold for less than $10 for us to hack/unlock, YMMV.

Nice idea but I dont want my phone dependent upon a stick stuck into my computer AND I dont want to have my computer on ALL the time to have phone service (i.e., skype).

It says that it will do call forwarding and find me. I bet they charge for these services. As in, free to your computer but charge to the find me/forwarding numbers.

We'll see....

The concept sound interesting, but without the details I don't know how good the service will be. I'm willing to try it out, but it's not available until sometime in April.

Ok, it seems to be a USB analog telephone adapter with a ROM or FlashMemory that contains the softphone. That seems far from revolutionary, new or even worth noticing for me. USB phone adapters have been around for a while.

Re: [General] Magicjack

We are just going to have to wait until magicJack goes on sale to find out all the details. For example, can I get my phone number switched over to the new service or am I stuck with some new number or some number outside of my area code?

Will the magicJack service really have a clearer voice quality than say Skype?

I understand magicJack partner is YMax Communications Corp. which has a network covering most of the USA and is a certified competitive local exchange carrier with interconnect agreements with other carriers.

I hope magicJack is the real deal and will open for business soon. I have high hopes for great dirt cheap prices with solid service.

I notice the site »www.magicjack.com is down right now.
Perhaps the site will be updated or maybe magicJack was forced to shut down because of possible patent issues?

I'm shocked if they went this far to back down now. Maybe the site will be up again soon and will open for business.

I hate to think MagicJack might of been forced to close due to possible legal problems.

Re: [General] Magicjack

Well, today is April 30th and »www.magicjack.com is saying online sales in April'07. So, I called the 888 customer service number I found doing a Google search and received an answering machine that said Peter Russo and said to leave a message. So, I just hung up without leaving a message since magicJack is obviously not ready for business.

Anyone have any information about what is going on please post the information here. Thanks!

Re: [General] Magicjack

your eagerness to give Magicjack your money is a bit puzzling. normally one jumps on a bandwagon ... Magicjack doesn't seem to have a band, much less a wagon. Do you simply want to be customer #1? If so, that's fine, but you might do well to use this delay to get one of those temporary credit card numbers so a few months from now we all won't have to hear about how Magicjack continues to bill you after you've tried to cancel.

LOL RockyBB I'm more interested in getting information rather than jumping on possible vaporware!

I did try to send an e-mail for information as the website does have a Contact Us link. Here is the reply
"This recipient e-mail address was not found in the recipient e-mail system. Microsoft Exchange will not try to redeliver this message for you. Please check the recipient e-mail address and try resending this message, or provide the following diagnostic text to your system administrator."

Not a good sign! The information I gathered indicates a possible vaporware product. I'm not jumping on the empty wagon.

Re: [General] Magicjack

it's not yet to the stage of being vaporware ... they're not even taking orders. until they solicit business, and start taking payments, it would be way premature have any opinion (good or bad) about them ... disclosure: in a far off world, a long time ago, I knew one of their masterminds, Dan Borislow, when he was running Tel-Save. No chance he would remember me today. He was very customer focused at that time.

Re: [General] Magicjack

I just went back to »www.magicjack.com and can see some work has been done to the site. The site went from a Beta 2 site to a Beta 3 site. Oh sure, I see what is looking like a place where you could order the product. However, there are some important details lacking on the site. For example, right now I fail to see the answer to a few main questions and they are can you get an area code for the area you live in and is it possible to keep your own phone number?

The lack of details is not a good sign. Hopefully some more information will become available soon. With the lack of details about magicJack, only a fool would try to purchase the product at this time.

There have been more updates to »www.magicjack.com/site/index.html

There is a magicFix download to see if your computer/broadband/router can run magicJack and it even suggest what to do if a router need to be setup differently to run magicJack.

The site is still in Beta 3. There are still no details about getting your area code and no information about porting your current phone number.

magicJack is still a no buy for me without more answers to questions.

I noticed »forum.magicjack.com has opened right now and I posted my question in the forum topic MagicJack Phone Service
Posted: Thu Jun 14, 2007 9:45 pm Post subject: When Will magicJack Offer 502 Area Code Phone Numbers?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I want sign up for the magicJack service, but I have a couple of questions. When will magicJack offer 502 area code phone numbers?

It would be nice to port my current phone number too, but if that is not possible I can live with a different number in the 502 area code.

Is it true that magicJack is offering only Florida area code phone numbers right now?

Re: [General] Magicjack

I decided to try out magicJack now. I ordered one on June 21, 2007 and received it on June 25,2007. Below is my first report.

magicJack voice quality is great! It’s better than my AT&T land line and better than my cell phone!

This is my first report on my use of magicJack. I only had time to set it up and test sending and getting phone calls for an hour. I installed magicJack on my main computer at home which is an XP 2005 media center O/S on a Dell PC with all the window updates installed and my broadband connection is through Insight in Louisville, KY. I have a router and access point at home too.

I just installed magicJack with the phone line connected directly to the magicJack. I used my speakers and mic as the way to communicate with magicJack. I had no problems installing magicJack except I did have to go to »www.magicjack.com/site/CustomerS···ues.html to get my audio to work. The instructions to fix the audio issues were simple and it did work. I registered magicJack as it gave me the option to pick Colorado 303 area code with prefix 719 for Denver, Michigan 734 area code with prefix 708 for Detroit, Minnesota 952 area code with prefix 583 for Minneapolis, Nevada area code 702 with prefix 421 for Las Vegas, Tennessee area codes 901 and 615 with the 901 area code having prefix 217 for Memphis and the 615 area code having the prefix 530 for Nashville, and Washington 206 area code with prefix 497 for Seattle.
I picked Nashville area code 615 with prefix 530 and magicJack assigned me the last 4 digits of my new phone number.

I made and received phone calls, followed the simple magicJack software instructions to setup the voice mail and the phone system does work with crystal clear audio which is better than my cell phone or crappy AT&T land line.

When I have my phone line hooked into magicJack my regular crappy AT&T land line will get the busy signal when trying to dial that number.
That is really no big deal as I plan to use this magicJack at home to listen to my Monday nights long distance real estate teleseminars and make long distance phone calls to friends, etc.

I do plan to hook up magicJack to a regular phone and set the user friendly magicJack software menu feature to work with a regular phone, but thought it was neat that it will work with a phone line hooked directly to magicJack using the computer mic and speakers.

When magicJack offers me to port my home and office phone numbers that will be great as then it will be time to buy magicJacks to work on my office phone lines and to buy magicJacks as real estate closing gifts and as Christmas, and birthday gifts.

I’m in love with YMax Communications magicJack.

Re: [General] Magicjack

Here is a cordless Uniden phone that will work with magicJack.
Uniden America Corp cordless phone model EX17960 will work. Just take any phone cord and stick one end on magicJack and the other end plug into the spot on Uniden that has a slot for the phone line. Of course the magicJack is in a USB port of a computer and the computer must be running.
Now your old regular land line with it own regular phone number will still work too. So what you have now is an extra phone with your magicJack phone number. Hopefully sometime you can get your area code and then sometime down the road port your land line number to the magicJack and then cancel out your old regular land line.

Corded GE phone Model 2-9223BKB also does work with magicJack.

Phone Results When Watching Streaming Video On Computer

I ran a magicJack phone test while watching streaming video on the computer.

I was able to receive and make calls using my cordless Uniden EX17960 phone and I still had crystal clear audio! I'm using Insight cable broadband.
It's impressive the phone audio was crystal clear and better than my cell phone or my lousy AT&T land line.

Re: [General] Magicjack

Would having a router on one channel with an access point on another channel allow two magicJacks to work with each magicJack on a different computer with one connected to the router and the other connected to the access point?

I'm going to find out for myself the answer to the above question. I just ordered my 2nd magicJack. When it does come I'll try my idea out.
At home I already have the above setup. At the office I only have a router. There is no point in buying an access point for the office until I find out if my idea will work.
_______________________________
The bottom line is this does work as both magicJacks can make and receive phone calls without conflict!

The 2nd magicJack I ordered came in the mail this morning. I had no trouble installing it on a Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop with XP media center O/S. I didn't even have to adjust the audio settings this time! I registered
this magicJack with a different e-mail address with same area code (615) and prefix 530 since Nashville, Tennessee is closest available area code/prefix to Louisville, KY available to me at this time.

MagicJack #1 is connected to a computer that is connected to a Linksys WRT54GL Wireless G Broadband router using channel 6. MagicJack #2 is on the laptop that is connected to a Linksys WAP54G Wireless G access point using channel 11. I'm using Insight cable modem service.

There you have one way to have two magicJacks working!

Sounds pretty cool but it does concern me that your computer has to be on for it to work. When I think of the times that I want to restart my computer or just have it off, it becomes a problem.

Ordered 2 over the weekend. They came in the mail today.
It took a few extra steps/reboots to get the first one up and running on Win2K, but so far all seems well.

Not sure just what of the several extra reboots and switching it from one USB port to another fixed the install on this unsupported operating system, but persistence paid off.

Re: [General] Magicjack

I ordered one yesterday and it shipped out today. I assume they're shipping via USPS Priority mail, so I should have it by Sat. With the sunrocket discount code, I was able to get the device and 2 years of service for $54.90 shipped. Looking forward to it.

I ordered mine last Wednesday 11th. It shipped on the 12th. I received it on Monday. It took longer to get it out the plastic then it did to install it. 615 area code/Nashville was the closest number I could get to North Carolina.
The voice quality is ok. It does not come close to my Call Vantage or Packet 8 lines but is more than usable. I have used it with a cordless phone and with the soft phone. The soft phone works well. The voice mail works and it sends e-mails. For $40.00 you can't beat it. I've showed it to several friends and I think they are going to buy as well.

This is what the link on their main page should take you to, I believe they're in the process of fixing it:

Received mine on Friday morning and I was pleasantly surprised. Can't wait til they have local area codes so I can tell everyone at work. I just wished we had newer computers

Can you use two magicJacks in the same computer? I figured you should be able to as long as they're on 2 physical usb ports of the computer, instead of on one of those USB expander ports. Anyone know for sure if using 2 MagicJacks on the same XP pc is possibe (basically getting two lines in and out?) I am a SunRocket orphan too, and want something cheap with 2 lines (loved the virtual number with SR--darn them!)

Hi,
Just have few Questions about MagicJack
I called the customer service and asked them, is it required to keep the system ON always for making and receiving calls.
The answer is to use the 'forward me' option when we want to turn off the system
Now my question is.
If during the night time i switch off the system and in the morning if i turn on the system..then can i start using the phone to make calls again????
OR is it necessary that once the software is installed that i should keep the system ON always to make calls
Please answer

You can turn your computer on and off all you want but when your computer is off you will not have the phone service.

The sunrocket coupon supposedly expired at midnight on the 3rd, although it still worked for the free shipping on my order a few minutes ago(I ordered the pink one and two years of service). My primary use will be for outgoing long distance calls only, as I plan on keeping my landline.

Re: [General] Magicjack

I can't wait for it to get here so I can try it out. I'll probably keep it plugged into a secondary system I have and make it my dedicated magicjack PC.

I've been using the magicjack for 3 days and it's GREAT!

I signed up for 2 years for $59.90, which means FREE calls in the U.S. and Canada for 2 years!

Overall cost, $2.50 a month.

I'm recommending the magicjack to friends and they are excited about getting it too.

Same here. Mine came on Saturday and after a flawless setup, it's working perfectly. It's really a nice little device, and the call quality was superb. I plan on taking with me on vacation twice in the next 45 days, so I'll be able to give it a good workout on a different ISP (I'm on Fios).

So far, I love the little device.

So how is this much different than skypes offering ? At least with skype you can make international calls if needbe.

I did purchase a USB adapter for skype allowing me to use my home phone on it. I also find it quite useful running skype on my Dell Axim Handheld Running Windows Mobile using a bluetooth headset.

When I sied up for my skype unlimtied 1 year program they offered it to me at a discount of $15.00 per year when it is normally $30 and the gave me a $3 credit for international calls.

Also how many minutes are you limited to making per month with magicjack?

Thank you

KieranMullen
