| [General] Magicjack Anyone have comments on Magicjack? Looks like an ATA just built into an USB device. Looks like a year of service is about $20, and you buy the adapter for about $30. Service is unlimited in USA & Canada, and even parts of Europe.
The investors in this company just bought SJ Labs, so they seem serious enough to suceed.

| Re: [General] Magicjack From the pictures it looks self powered. How great would it be if you could actually have a device plug in any computer with a broadband connection. Would 801.1G connection give enough throughput? You could use your phone with your notebook at any hotspot easily.
Herb Greenberg, a financial guy did a story on this and said he hooked it up instantly. I wonder what drivers it needs, and if any need installing? (lets assume WINXP) If the device really can sell for about $50 with a year of service and phone number with it, now you are talking a nice gift for someone. The venture is private. I know Skype is around, but this seems much simpler, and simplicity is why I went with Sunrocket. SR, one $200 bill per year, imagine getting the same service for $30 a year. They mention parts of Europe are free.

| Re: [General] Magicjack said by schipperke :How great would it be if you could actually have a device plug in any computer with a broadband connection. Honestly, I will no longer invest my $$ on any USB ATA since I have managed to get some ATA units, i.e. Linksys PAP2, very inexpensive. OTOH, the audio quality on any USB ATA really depends on the state of your computer and that is not acceptable to me, YMMV.
If you really want to be able to use a VoIP on WiFi hotspots, your best solution is to get a WiFi phone. The other option is to buy a very inexpensive WiFi router supported by some open-source firmware to run DD-WRT, configure with WDS, and attach a SIP ATA with some (cordless) phone. The whole system can be mounted in your car and all you need is to park your car near by a WiFi hotspot to access the Internet and carry the cordless phone within the range.
Herb Greenberg, a financial guy did a story on this and said he hooked it up instantly. Can you please provide the link for us to follow up and read?
If the device really can sell for about $50 with a year of service and phone number with it, now you are talking a nice gift for someone. AFAIC, this kind of offer is not a good idea to have because the device will be locked and tied to their service unless it is sold for less than $10 for us to hack/unlock, YMMV. -- Mazi (UK Non-Geo Phone: +44-703-194-2574)

| Nice idea but I dont want my phone dependent upon a stick stuck into my computer AND I dont want to have my computer on ALL the time to have phone service (i.e., skype).
It says that it will do call forwarding and find me. I bet they charge for these services. As in, free to your computer but charge to the find me/forwarding numbers.

| Re: [General] Magicjack I decided to try out magicJack now. I ordered one on June 21, 2007 and received it on June 25,2007. Below is my first report.
magicJack voice quality is great! Its better than my AT&T land line and better than my cell phone!
This is my first report on my use of magicJack. I only had time to set it up and test sending and getting phone calls for an hour. I installed magicJack on my main computer at home which is an XP 2005 media center O/S on a Dell PC with all the window updates installed and my broadband connection is through Insight in Louisville, KY. I have a router and access point at home too.
I just installed magicJack with the phone line connected directly to the magicJack. I used my speakers and mic as the way to communicate with magicJack. I had no problems installing magicJack except I did have to go to »www.magicjack.com/site/CustomerS···ues.html to get my audio to work. The instructions to fix the audio issues were simple and it did work. I registered magicJack as it gave me the option to pick Colorado 303 area code with prefix 719 for Denver, Michigan 734 area code with prefix 708 for Detroit, Minnesota 952 area code with prefix 583 for Minneapolis, Nevada area code 702 with prefix 421 for Las Vegas, Tennessee area codes 901 and 615 with the 901 area code having prefix 217 for Memphis and the 615 area code having the prefix 530 for Nashville, and Washington 206 area code with prefix 497 for Seattle. I picked Nashville area code 615 with prefix 530 and magicJack assigned me the last 4 digits of my new phone number.
I made and received phone calls, followed the simple magicJack software instructions to setup the voice mail and the phone system does work with crystal clear audio which is better than my cell phone or crappy AT&T land line.
When I have my phone line hooked into magicJack my regular crappy AT&T land line will get the busy signal when trying to dial that number. That is really no big deal as I plan to use this magicJack at home to listen to my Monday nights long distance real estate teleseminars and make long distance phone calls to friends, etc.
I do plan to hook up magicJack to a regular phone and set the user friendly magicJack software menu feature to work with a regular phone, but thought it was neat that it will work with a phone line hooked directly to magicJack using the computer mic and speakers.
When magicJack offers me to port my home and office phone numbers that will be great as then it will be time to buy magicJacks to work on my office phone lines and to buy magicJacks as real estate closing gifts and as Christmas, and birthday gifts.
Im in love with YMax Communications magicJack. -- low cost and fast speed is what customers want in broadband

1 edit | Re: [General] Magicjack Here is a cordless Uniden phone that will work with magicJack. Uniden America Corp cordless phone model EX17960 will work. Just take any phone cord and stick one end on magicJack and the other end plug into the spot on Uniden that has a slot for the phone line. Of course the magicJack is in a USB port of a computer and the computer must be running. Now your old regular land line with it own regular phone number will still work too. So what you have now is an extra phone with your magicJack phone number. Hopefully sometime you can get your area code and then sometime down the road port your land line number to the magicJack and then cancel out your old regular land line.
Corded GE phone Model 2-9223BKB also does work with magicJack. -- low cost and fast speed is what customers want in broadband

| Re: [General] Magicjack Would having a router on one channel with an access point on another channel allow two magicJacks to work with each magicJack on a different computer with one connected to the router and the other connected to the access point?
I'm going to find out for myself the answer to the above question. I just ordered my 2nd magicJack. When it does come I'll try my idea out. At home I already have the above setup. At the office I only have a router. There is no point in buying an access point for the office until I find out if my idea will work. _______________________________ The bottom line is this does work as both magicJacks can make and receive phone calls without conflict!
The 2nd magicJack I ordered came in the mail this morning. I had no trouble installing it on a Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop with XP media center O/S. I didn't even have to adjust the audio settings this time! I registered this magicJack with a different e-mail address with same area code (615) and prefix 530 since Nashville, Tennessee is closest available area code/prefix to Louisville, KY available to me at this time.
MagicJack #1 is connected to a computer that is connected to a Linksys WRT54GL Wireless G Broadband router using channel 6. MagicJack #2 is on the laptop that is connected to a Linksys WAP54G Wireless G access point using channel 11. I'm using Insight cable modem service.
There you have one way to have two magicJacks working! -- low cost and fast speed is what customers want in broadband

| I ordered mine last Wednesday 11th. It shipped on the 12th. I received it on Monday. It took longer to get it out the plastic then it did to install it. 615 area code/Nashville was the closest number I could get to North Carolina. The voice quality is ok. It does not come close to my Call Vantage or Packet 8 lines but is more than usable. I have used it with a cordless phone and with the soft phone. The soft phone works well. The voice mail works and it sends e-mails. For $40.00 you can't beat it. I've showed it to several friends and I think they are going to buy as well. | |

| Hi, Just have few Questions about MagicJack I called the customer service and asked them, is it required to keep the system ON always for making and receiving calls. The answer is to use the 'forward me' option when we want to turn off the system Now my question is. If during the night time i switch off the system and in the morning if i turn on the system..then can i start using the phone to make calls again???? OR is it necessary that once the software is installed that i should keep the system ON always to make calls Please answer | |

| magicjack I've been using the magicjack for 3 days and it's GREAT!
I signed up for 2 years for $59.90, which means FREE calls in the U.S. and Canada for 2 years!
Overall cost, $2.50 a month.
I'm recommending the magicjack to friends and they are excited about getting it too.

Mine came on Saturday and after a flawless setup, it's working perfectly. It's really a nice little device, and the call quality was superb. I plan on taking with me on vacation twice in the next 45 days, so I'll be able to give it a good workout on a different ISP (I'm on Fios).
So far, I love the little device. -- "When you get lost in your imaginatory vagueness, your foresight becomes a nimble vagrant."
