Re: [General] Magicjack

it's not yet to the stage of being vaporware ... they're not even taking orders. until they solicit business, and start taking payments, it would be way premature have any opinion (good or bad) about them ... disclosure: in a far off world, a long time ago, I knew one of their masterminds, Dan Borislow, when he was running Tel-Save. No chance he would remember me today. He was very customer focused at that time.

Looks as if you can finally purchase their product. That would mean it's "out of beta" basically. Anybody have any experience with them?

I just went back to »www.magicjack.com and can see some work has been done to the site. The site went from a Beta 2 site to a Beta 3 site. Oh sure, I see what is looking like a place where you could order the product. However, there are some important details lacking on the site. For example, right now I fail to see the answer to a few main questions and they are can you get an area code for the area you live in and is it possible to keep your own phone number?

The lack of details is not a good sign. Hopefully some more information will become available soon. With the lack of details about magicJack, only a fool would try to purchase the product at this time.

There have been more updates to »www.magicjack.com/site/index.html

There is a magicFix download to see if your computer/broadband/router can run magicJack and it even suggest what to do if a router need to be setup differently to run magicJack.

The site is still in Beta 3. There are still no details about getting your area code and no information about porting your current phone number.

magicJack is still a no buy for me without more answers to questions.

I noticed »forum.magicjack.com has opened right now and I posted my question in the forum topic MagicJack Phone Service
Posted: Thu Jun 14, 2007 9:45 pm Post subject: When Will magicJack Offer 502 Area Code Phone Numbers?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I want sign up for the magicJack service, but I have a couple of questions. When will magicJack offer 502 area code phone numbers?

It would be nice to port my current phone number too, but if that is not possible I can live with a different number in the 502 area code.

Is it true that magicJack is offering only Florida area code phone numbers right now?

Sincerely,
AlaninKY

I'd seriously love to know more about this... but it seems to be either a closely guarded secret or people aren't buying into this product as I'd expected.

I'm still happy with my occasional VoiceStick usage... but I'd love to see this in action.

I decided to try out magicJack now. I ordered one on June 21, 2007 and received it on June 25,2007. Below is my first report.

magicJack voice quality is great! It’s better than my AT&T land line and better than my cell phone!

This is my first report on my use of magicJack. I only had time to set it up and test sending and getting phone calls for an hour. I installed magicJack on my main computer at home which is an XP 2005 media center O/S on a Dell PC with all the window updates installed and my broadband connection is through Insight in Louisville, KY. I have a router and access point at home too.

I just installed magicJack with the phone line connected directly to the magicJack. I used my speakers and mic as the way to communicate with magicJack. I had no problems installing magicJack except I did have to go to »www.magicjack.com/site/CustomerS···ues.html to get my audio to work. The instructions to fix the audio issues were simple and it did work. I registered magicJack as it gave me the option to pick Colorado 303 area code with prefix 719 for Denver, Michigan 734 area code with prefix 708 for Detroit, Minnesota 952 area code with prefix 583 for Minneapolis, Nevada area code 702 with prefix 421 for Las Vegas, Tennessee area codes 901 and 615 with the 901 area code having prefix 217 for Memphis and the 615 area code having the prefix 530 for Nashville, and Washington 206 area code with prefix 497 for Seattle.
I picked Nashville area code 615 with prefix 530 and magicJack assigned me the last 4 digits of my new phone number.

I made and received phone calls, followed the simple magicJack software instructions to setup the voice mail and the phone system does work with crystal clear audio which is better than my cell phone or crappy AT&T land line.

When I have my phone line hooked into magicJack my regular crappy AT&T land line will get the busy signal when trying to dial that number.
That is really no big deal as I plan to use this magicJack at home to listen to my Monday nights long distance real estate teleseminars and make long distance phone calls to friends, etc.

I do plan to hook up magicJack to a regular phone and set the user friendly magicJack software menu feature to work with a regular phone, but thought it was neat that it will work with a phone line hooked directly to magicJack using the computer mic and speakers.

When magicJack offers me to port my home and office phone numbers that will be great as then it will be time to buy magicJacks to work on my office phone lines and to buy magicJacks as real estate closing gifts and as Christmas, and birthday gifts.

I’m in love with YMax Communications magicJack.

Here is a cordless Uniden phone that will work with magicJack.
Uniden America Corp cordless phone model EX17960 will work. Just take any phone cord and stick one end on magicJack and the other end plug into the spot on Uniden that has a slot for the phone line. Of course the magicJack is in a USB port of a computer and the computer must be running.
Now your old regular land line with it own regular phone number will still work too. So what you have now is an extra phone with your magicJack phone number. Hopefully sometime you can get your area code and then sometime down the road port your land line number to the magicJack and then cancel out your old regular land line.

Corded GE phone Model 2-9223BKB also does work with magicJack.

Phone Results When Watching Streaming Video On Computer

I ran a magicJack phone test while watching streaming video on the computer.

I was able to receive and make calls using my cordless Uniden EX17960 phone and I still had crystal clear audio! I'm using Insight cable broadband.
It's impressive the phone audio was crystal clear and better than my cell phone or my lousy AT&T land line.

Would having a router on one channel with an access point on another channel allow two magicJacks to work with each magicJack on a different computer with one connected to the router and the other connected to the access point?

I'm going to find out for myself the answer to the above question. I just ordered my 2nd magicJack. When it does come I'll try my idea out.
At home I already have the above setup. At the office I only have a router. There is no point in buying an access point for the office until I find out if my idea will work.
_______________________________
The bottom line is this does work as both magicJacks can make and receive phone calls without conflict!

The 2nd magicJack I ordered came in the mail this morning. I had no trouble installing it on a Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop with XP media center O/S. I didn't even have to adjust the audio settings this time! I registered
this magicJack with a different e-mail address with same area code (615) and prefix 530 since Nashville, Tennessee is closest available area code/prefix to Louisville, KY available to me at this time.

MagicJack #1 is connected to a computer that is connected to a Linksys WRT54GL Wireless G Broadband router using channel 6. MagicJack #2 is on the laptop that is connected to a Linksys WAP54G Wireless G access point using channel 11. I'm using Insight cable modem service.

There you have one way to have two magicJacks working!

Sounds pretty cool but it does concern me that your computer has to be on for it to work. When I think of the times that I want to restart my computer or just have it off, it becomes a problem.

My computer runs all the time except the monitor. My kids are too lazy to shut it down anyway. It is really no different then say a DVR running all the time. I do reboot my machine about every week and will continue to do so. I will be without service for the most 5 minutes. Worth it for the money savings if you ask me.

Yes it would. But i suppose I can just take one of the old boxes I have laying around and dedicate that to MagicJack. oh oh I see it only runs on XP or vista.. Wonder why not on my standard win2k?

Also noticed that Magicjack has just had a price increase. This morning the shipping was free. Now they are charging $3.95 shipping per device, cant even get a break on shipping for two.

The links from BBR must be ringing up lots of sales for them.

I see nothing on their site prior to paying for the order that tells anything about the phone number one gets with the device... so do you just wait until it arives to see if the number is useful to you? that's not good...

I must of been one of the last few orders to get free shipping this morning, had to pay tax since MagicJack is out of Florida though. They won't give you a number ahead of time as it seems they are just about to add many local numbers across the US according to their forums. It is funny I had never heard of them until this whole Sunrocket thing today as you mentioned. They probably had a record day of sales.

Got my MagicJack today 7/16 after ordering on Friday 7/13. Very quick shipping! Plugged it into a usb port and used the usb extension cable that comes with it. Don't want any bending in case my pc gets moved around.

Software loaded as soon as I plugged it in. A window to register 911 info soon appeared. Another screen to select available numbers after that. A software update was also automatically downloaded. Nearest number to Florida was Nashville, TN exchange. They are suppose to be adding more numbers by September.

Voice quality on the few test calls I have made are excellent. Just have to remember to dial area code for local numbers. Considering dropping Earthlink TrueVoice as soon as I get a local number. Probably will get a bare bones plan with another service just for backup since this MagicJack service is so new.

Packaging was very professional looking and bubble pack wasn't easy to open I must add. Looks like they are going to sell this in retail stores in the future.

First article I have seen with details about their network. Looks like they have spent some big bucks so far. Hopefully their network can handle future growth and they will be around longer than SunRocket was.
