Is there any way to run MJ on Linux? |

However, I have ordered 2 years of MagicJack anyway, for $59.90 and am looking forward to using it to make calls. |

Sunrocketeer that did not get my last 3 months. Ordered VOIP.COM to replace sunrocket. A day later ordered MAGICJACK. Received MAGICJACK already, waiting for VOIP.COM adapter. MAGICJACK did not work right away, I had to click on it after it appeared in my computer as a drive. It did install, it is working great. I plugged it to my internal home lines and all the phones ring and are able to make phone calls from any of the phones. I have talked without drops, snaps, crackles or echos. I even managed to fax out with it. Using 1 and 3 page faxes. Using 2 different faxes. Got a line or two not looking right but this could happen with any VOIP line otherwise the faxes were perfect. $39.99 plus tax and the shipping was discounted with the SUNROCKET coupon. I am going to recommended to all my friends.
Cons: You have to keep your pc on all of the time to make phone calls, the softphone is always on, there are not to many area codes to choose from, there are not many features and no number porting.
Pros: It works, no more phone bills, price is practically free, very portable, and faxing worked for me.
I will be using it as a backup for now and I hope that the company and the concept take off. |

3 edits | MagicJack is still in beta, and still seems to have some bugs. I've got it working well now, but for some reason, when I first installed it, it didn't like the USB port that I plugged it into. I could make one outgoing call, and despite everything looking fine, couldn't make another one unless I removed and re-inserted the MagicJack device (on removing the device I would get an error that the MagicJack software was not responding). After plugging it into a different USB port (on the same card), it is now working well.
In addition to this, yesterday for awhile people were getting the "all circuits are busy" message while trying to call my incoming number. After a while, service returned to normal.
MagicJack is a fun gadget to play with, and I'm sure we will see some third-party software for it from the developer community. Right now, it's still in a bit of a buggy beta. |

Magicjack works 'jes fine on Win2K. I did have the audio-hijack glitch, easily reset using instructions elsewhere on this page. |

Has anyone tried inserting magicjack directly into Modem or router USB port or using Ethernet to USB adapter? It won't work, it uses software and has to be connected to a computer. It is based on SJPhone since they bought out the company. --

| reply to schipperke The sunrocket coupon supposedly expired at midnight on the 3rd, although it still worked for the free shipping on my order a few minutes ago(I ordered the pink one and two years of service). My primary use will be for outgoing long distance calls only, as I plan on keeping my landline. |

I've been using the magicjack for 3 days and it's GREAT!
I signed up for 2 years for $59.90, which means FREE calls in the U.S. and Canada for 2 years!
Overall cost, $2.50 a month.
I'm recommending the magicjack to friends and they are excited about getting it too. |

I can't wait for it to get here so I can try it out. I'll probably keep it plugged into a secondary system I have and make it my dedicated magicjack PC. |

| reply to schipperke So how is this much different than skypes offering ? At least with skype you can make international calls if needbe.
I did purchase a USB adapter for skype allowing me to use my home phone on it. I also find it quite useful running skype on my Dell Axim Handheld Running Windows Mobile using a bluetooth headset.
When I sied up for my skype unlimtied 1 year program they offered it to me at a discount of $15.00 per year when it is normally $30 and the gave me a $3 credit for international calls.
Also how many minutes are you limited to making per month with magicjack?
Thank you

| Kieran,
For the price ($30) you get the unlimited calling + you also get the USB Adaptor. A similar device for Skype could run upwards of $50 simply for the USB adaptor itself. Also Skype can turn your computer into a supernode, which essentially uses your bandwidth for routing other people's calls.
Finally take a look at Skype's world wide offerings, they have a pricing model of a monthly fee plus a call connection charge for each call that is placed, and they have placed a soft cap in terms of minutes used on these plans (though I'm not sure if there is a limit on the North America plan). Their plan was to do the same for NAmerica, but two things stopped them. Skype is adopted much more in Europe and Asia because of high calling rates there, and a relatively good broadband penetration. They also had difficulty storing users Credit card details here in North America making it difficult for them to do a recurring charge. They do however plan to move from an unlimited model to a pay per call + monthly fee model eventually when they can iron out the problems.
Other than that about the only advantage of skype is that you can now use it with WIFI phones, they however have poor battery life, and aren't ready for prime time either. If you don't mind spending $100 + you can buy a Skype device that plugs directly into the ethernet portion of your router. I would think that this would be useful, but if Skype switches to their pay per call model then any long term savings versus traditional VOIP providers (say packet 8, Vonage etc) would be negated. -- "So this is how liberty dies. | I understand the supernode, but I have been behind a router and as such I have never become a supernode.
I wouls never buy a iphone / skype wireless phone .. I got 2 dell axims x51v's for $150 each on ebay and the do much more.
there is no way that I would have 40-50 for a usb device. they can be had for much cheaper
maybe when my skype runs out, you can make international calls and magicjack runs on windows mobile, I will take a look at it

1 edit | reply to redshift ps nothing is ever "umlimited" it is just a marketing ploy
a busy household with 4-5 members could go over 5k min a month
usually terms of service will state this if the company is upfront and honest.
does magicjack have this in their tos?

1 edit | I clearly said that skype has a well advertised Softcap on it's international plans...magicjack OTOH does not.
I have no idea what magicjack has in their TOS as I don't have the device...but I'm sure you can look it up.
You might be able to get the device for under $50, but I said UPTO. While we are at it, why don't you factor in the cost of getting in a DID from skype? It's not $30 if you include the cost of that. With magicjack this comes included. Also you can forward a Grandcentral number to magicjack for free; you can't do that with skype unless you purchase their DID.
Your question was how was this offer any different than skype; but you were rude in your answer..so if you want a civil disscussion lets procede, but if you want to be brash and arrogant, then I believe this discussion is over. -- "So this is how liberty dies. With thunderous applause." |

| I am sure skype has a cap too. what is it?
I didn't figure in the cost of the did. that is a good point.
however cost of long distance + did + hardware = > Price magicjack charges..
I wonder how long this introductory price will last |
|
redshift Premium join:2004-03-23 Beverly Hills, CA
| I've never seen the cap limit on skype. I use about 1000 minutes a month on the unlimited skype deal, and haven't had any issues yet; though it may have a soft cap hidden in the TOS somewhere.
That's the problem, this introductory price may last only a year or two, and if they don't make money on advertising you can bet it's going to go up.
Same with the skype deal. Meg Whittman has been putting a lot of pressure on the Skype team to come up with ways of increasing their revenue (even though they have already increased it greatly in the last year or so) and it's only a matter of time before this 29.95 deal (or $15 when I got it) price disappears. If you check the financial reports on Skype you can see that they will be moving to a pay per call model as soon as NAmerican adoption rates increase; and they get their credit card storage act together. -- "So this is how liberty dies. With thunderous applause." |
