redshift : Kieran,

For the price ($30) you get the unlimited calling + you also get the USB Adaptor. A similar device for Skype could run upwards of $50 simply for the USB adaptor itself. Also Skype can turn your computer into a supernode, which essentially uses your bandwidth for routing other people's calls.

Finally take a look at Skype's world wide offerings, they have a pricing model of a monthly fee plus a call connection charge for each call that is placed, and they have placed a soft cap in terms of minutes used on these plans (though I'm not sure if there is a limit on the North America plan). Their plan was to do the same for NAmerica, but two things stopped them. Skype is adopted much more in Europe and Asia because of high calling rates there, and a relatively good broadband penetration. They also had difficulty storing users Credit card details here in North America making it difficult for them to do a recurring charge. They do however plan to move from an unlimited model to a pay per call + monthly fee model eventually when they can iron out the problems.

Other than that about the only advantage of skype is that you can now use it with WIFI phones, they however have poor battery life, and aren't ready for prime time either. If you don't mind spending $100 + you can buy a Skype device that plugs directly into the ethernet portion of your router. I would think that this would be useful, but if Skype switches to their pay per call model then any long term savings versus traditional VOIP providers (say packet 8, Vonage etc) would be negated.
--
"So this is how liberty dies. Received MAGICJACK already, waiting for VOIP.COM adapter. MAGICJACK did not work right away, I had to click on it after it appeared in my computer as a drive. It did install, it is working great. I plugged it to my internal home lines and all the phones ring and are able to make phone calls from any of the phones. I have talked without drops, snaps, crackles or echos. I even managed to fax out with it. Using 1 and 3 page faxes. Using 2 different faxes. Got a line or two not looking right but this could happen with any VOIP line otherwise the faxes were perfect. $39.99 plus tax and the shipping was discounted with the SUNROCKET coupon. I am going to recommended to all my friends.

Cons: You have to keep your pc on all of the time to make phone calls, the softphone is always on, there are not to many area codes to choose from, there are not many features and no number porting.

Pros: It works, no more phone bills, price is practically free, very portable, and faxing worked for me.

I will be using it as a backup for now and I hope that the company and the concept take off.

AJICQ499087 : I decided to try out magicJack now. I ordered one on June 21, 2007 and received it on June 25,2007. Below is my first report.

magicJack voice quality is great! It’s better than my AT&T land line and better than my cell phone!

This is my first report on my use of magicJack. I only had time to set it up and test sending and getting phone calls for an hour. I installed magicJack on my main computer at home which is an XP 2005 media center O/S on a Dell PC with all the window updates installed and my broadband connection is through Insight in Louisville, KY. I have a router and access point at home too.

I just installed magicJack with the phone line connected directly to the magicJack. I used my speakers and mic as the way to communicate with magicJack. I had no problems installing magicJack except I did have to go to »www.magicjack.com/site/CustomerS···ues.html to get my audio to work. The instructions to fix the audio issues were simple and it did work. I registered magicJack as it gave me the option to pick Colorado 303 area code with prefix 719 for Denver, Michigan 734 area code with prefix 708 for Detroit, Minnesota 952 area code with prefix 583 for Minneapolis, Nevada area code 702 with prefix 421 for Las Vegas, Tennessee area codes 901 and 615 with the 901 area code having prefix 217 for Memphis and the 615 area code having the prefix 530 for Nashville, and Washington 206 area code with prefix 497 for Seattle.
I picked Nashville area code 615 with prefix 530 and magicJack assigned me the last 4 digits of my new phone number.

I made and received phone calls, followed the simple magicJack software instructions to setup the voice mail and the phone system does work with crystal clear audio which is better than my cell phone or crappy AT&T land line.

When I have my phone line hooked into magicJack my regular crappy AT&T land line will get the busy signal when trying to dial that number.
That is really no big deal as I plan to use this magicJack at home to listen to my Monday nights long distance real estate teleseminars and make long distance phone calls to friends, etc.

I do plan to hook up magicJack to a regular phone and set the user friendly magicJack software menu feature to work with a regular phone, but thought it was neat that it will work with a phone line hooked directly to magicJack using the computer mic and speakers.

When magicJack offers me to port my home and office phone numbers that will be great as then it will be time to buy magicJacks to work on my office phone lines and to buy magicJacks as real estate closing gifts and as Christmas, and birthday gifts. :)

I’m in love with YMax Communications magicJack. :)
--
low cost and fast speed is what customers want in broadband
