Re: [General] Magicjack

From the pictures it looks self powered. How great would it be if you could actually have a device plug in any computer with a broadband connection. Would 801.1G connection give enough throughput? You could use your phone with your notebook at any hotspot easily.

Herb Greenberg, a financial guy did a story on this and said he hooked it up instantly. I wonder what drivers it needs, and if any need installing? (lets assume WINXP) If the device really can sell for about $50 with a year of service and phone number with it, now you are talking a nice gift for someone. The venture is private. I know Skype is around, but this seems much simpler, and simplicity is why I went with Sunrocket. SR, one $200 bill per year, imagine getting the same service for $30 a year. They mention parts of Europe are free.

Honestly, I will no longer invest my $$ on any USB ATA since I have managed to get some ATA units, i.e. Linksys PAP2, very inexpensive. OTOH, the audio quality on any USB ATA really depends on the state of your computer and that is not acceptable to me, YMMV.

If you really want to be able to use a VoIP on WiFi hotspots, your best solution is to get a WiFi phone. The other option is to buy a very inexpensive WiFi router supported by some open-source firmware to run DD-WRT, configure with WDS, and attach a SIP ATA with some (cordless) phone. The whole system can be mounted in your car and all you need is to park your car near by a WiFi hotspot to access the Internet and carry the cordless phone within the range.

Can you please provide the link for us to follow up and read?

AFAIC, this kind of offer is not a good idea to have because the device will be locked and tied to their service unless it is sold for less than $10 for us to hack/unlock, YMMV.
