hmm ... powerboost?

Whats up? Is this just a server problem on there side? I'm downloading a 3gb file (ubuntu) with the live CD included. My download speeds are only 780kb/s but I have seen like 1.5mb/s before ... is this just because of the servers at ubuntu?

Could be their servers, routing from you to there, who knows.

I would light up a download manager and hit their server with 5(or more) connections and see what happens.

1.5mb/s is for the first 10-20 mb of the file. Then the rest of the download will you the dl speed you purchased. If your talking about Permaboost where the whole down is at 1.5 mb/s then it is gone now. It has been gone for about a month now, so you a little slow on the update.

yup ... I know that it was only for the first few mb worth of files.

As a Comcast High-Speed Internet customer, you're used to blazing fast speed. Now you can expect even more—right when you want it the most. Introducing PowerBoostTM, an exclusive new feature from Comcast High-Speed Internet.

PowerBoost gives you an extra burst of speed for faster downloads, up to 12Mbps when you download large files. Music, videos, software, online games—when you're downloading something big, PowerBoost kicks right in with speed bursts up to a blazing 12Mbps! DSL never stood a chance.

There is nothing to download to receive the PowerBoost upgrade. Just reboot your modem once by following one of the two procedures....

Thats the email they sent me and I did this and I have never seen any boost yet.

--------------------------------------

Ok I just got off of the live chat with them and this is what I got. Oh and here is the link I clicked from my email about the power boost.
If you need assistance, chat with one of our highly-trained representatives online at »www.comcastsupport.com/chat

(Comcast guy)(Fri Mar 9 16:23:39 EST 2007)>Thank you for contacting Comcast and for chatting with us today R71.

My name is (Comcast guy) and I will do my very best to assist you.

R71(Fri Mar 9 16:24:02 EST 2007)>I have not seen any power boost can you tell me why?

(Comcast guy)(Fri Mar 9 16:24:43 EST 2007)>What do you mean exactly R71?

R71(Fri Mar 9 16:25:00 EST 2007)>PowerBoost gives you an extra burst of speed for faster downloads, up to 12Mbps when you download large files. Music, videos, software, online games—when you're downloading something big, PowerBoost kicks right in with speed bursts up to a blazing 12Mbps! DSL never stood a chance.

R71(Fri Mar 9 16:25:56 EST 2007)>was sent to me in my email

R71(Fri Mar 9 16:26:52 EST 2007)>And I did this..... For Comcast High-Speed Internet Subscribers:
Simply unplug your cable modem, wait 60 seconds, and plug it back in again. If a router is connected to your modem, please follow the manufacturer's instructions to reboot.

(Comcast guy)(Fri Mar 9 16:27:27 EST 2007)>Okay, power boost does do that, but it has to be offered in your area for you to be entitled to have that, perhaps if you haven't felt the power boost yet, that is because it might be in your area soon, so you're getting a heads up.

R71(Fri Mar 9 16:27:58 EST 2007)>why did they send me that email then?

(Comcast guy)(Fri Mar 9 16:29:03 EST 2007)>To inform users so they know, so that not suddenly one day your internet is super fast and you guys wonder whats going on.

(Comcast guy)(Fri Mar 9 16:29:34 EST 2007)>Is there anything else I can do for you today R71?

R71(Fri Mar 9 16:30:02 EST 2007)>lol ok, no I do not need any thing else

Also, it says in big red words across the top of the email that "You just got a BIG Boost!" To me it seems like that means I should have it now.

Ok... lol One more edit here. I just found this in another link on that email and hit FAQ's for it. »www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.j···ost18507

FAQServices > PowerBoost
What do I need to do to get PowerBoost?
Nothing. PowerBoost has already been deployed in your area. If you suspect that you are not getting PowerBoost, simply reset your modem by unplugging it for 60 seconds and plugging it back into an electrical outlet. Compatible cable modem equipment is required, otherwise there is no action required on your part to receive the speed enhancement.

And I do have a comcast modem. I also called 1-866-447-7333 and got the same story for a tec. on the phone.

When the downlink "boost" was enabled, I saw my downlink speed reduced by 50%. Renting an older modem from Comcast, I took it to Customer Service and requested the best they had on the rental shelf. I came away with and installed the Motorola SB5101. It performs well.

If you see the downlink "boost" then you can be reasonably sure that the uplink "boost" should function when it is enabled for your node and within your modem's boot script.

Yeah I got the same email and even a form letter sent smail probably six months ago but still have not see anything even close to the existence of power boost in my area.

Large downloads (like a linux distro cd-ISO) from a fast server will shoot right up to 6 megabytes and flatten out for the duration.

Interesting to note Comcast has removed any mention of Powerboost in all their local radio, and news paper advertisements. Makes me think that it was a failure on our local system.

But hey I see their point, Bellingham is a small market with Qworst DSL being the only thing even close to competition. Why would Comcast even bother spending a dime on system upgrades?

Why would Comcast even bother spending a dime on system upgrades?
Because the "boost" concept improves real performance while improving capacity availability. Any shared capacity environment works this way as we learned in statistics class. Given finite resources and random requests for those resources, it is better to apply maximum resources to clear that request as quickly as possible. Focusing more resources to minimize the duration required to satisfy the request enables serving more requests than does limitting throughput which increases overlap in time.

I am a big fan of Comcast corporate management and their technical pursuits. Nobody is perfect, but for investing in, building, and operating an HFC system, Comcast is tops. There is still a wide deviation of systems evolution after they purchase those systems from other operators, but Comcast has a record of investing significant funds to get all HFC plants up to spec.

Fixed uneven quote tags. ~sorto'

I had a prob with there powerboost as well, all my downloads were very slow.I was messing with my network card settings today and it looks like I have the boost back.It doesn't show on speed tests but it did when I was downloading my video card drivers at Nvidia. The download started out at over 3000 and went down to 765.I was starting out at 43kb and going up from there.I have a Netgear GA311 Ethernet Network Card, the setting's that I changed in Device Manager are,I Enabled the Flow Control (that's the one that really helped),I also Enabled the Offload TCP_LargeSend and then set my Number Of High Priority Tx Descriptor Value to (512) the highest it would go to.Next was the Number Of Rx Descriptor Value to (512) and last was the Number Of Tx Descriptor also at a Value of (512).I think on some cards the (Rx Descriptor) and the (Tx Descriptor) are the send and receive buffers, most cards run better when set to 64 but I maxed mine out and it's working great for me.Don't forget to write down all you setting so if you have to go back to them you can.

Flow Control: Enabled

Offload TCP_LargeSend: Enabled

Number Of High Priority Tx Descriptor Value: Highest Value

Number Of Rx Descriptor Value: Highest Value

Number Of Tx Descriptor Value: Highest Value

I did this as well,it's all up to you if you want to or not....

Enable Network Card Task Offloading

This tweak will enable the processor on your Network Card(if your card has one) designed to offload network processing from the CPU.This is disabled by default.

1. Open the registry find the key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters]

2. Create and DWORD value if does not already exist( DisableTaskOffload ).Modify it to 0=use the processor or 1(default)=do not use the processor.

yeah I'm not sure what they even tell their techs..but I got so feed up with a few of them in two days time I almost threw the phone out the window. You tell them stuff thats RIGHT ON THEIR OWN COMPANIES WEBSITE!! and yet they don't have a clue what your talking about. I had one guy tell me he didn't even know what powerboost was..I too had to explain but once I got half way through I just gave up,hung up and called back to get someone else..then I got the next guy who's english was so bad I just gave up after 3mins of trying to understand what the hell he was saying I asked to be transfered. Next I get a woman that couldn't help me at all or tell me anything I needed to know. Next day I complained to the BBB cause support should at least have a slight clue as to what their own company offers and whats broken and working. Even more screwed up is this woman sent a local tech out to fix the problem I knew darn well wasn't at my house and was with their systems as in (no powerboost) (bad latency) etc... the poor guy came by asked me how things were running and left. I need that job!!!

I talked to some woman at comcast about a month ago and she said that if you do a lot of downloading the powerboost won't work for the rest of the month. She said that there was like some kind of cap on it, and if you go over so many MB's they cut you off.I don't know if it's true or not but that's what I was told.
