Need help...constantly getting dropped

My mom has Qwest DSL. Recently her ActionTec went legs up so I encouraged her to upgrade to what I thought was better equipment.

I bought her the following:

Zoom DSL modem
Linksys WRT54GS
DLINK Print Wireless Print Server

Now, we bought the Zoom because I haven't been impressed with her ActionTec. We bought the Linksys because a) the Zoom isn't wireless and b) I figured she could always use it if she switched to Cable. We couldn't locate a DSL modem in Boise that was wireless that wasn't ActionTec.

I set it up as follows. Zoom is on 10.x.x.x subnet and as far as I can tell is acting only as the gateway to the internet. The Linksys is providing DHCP for the wired and wireless network on the 192.168.x.x subnet. The DLINK is connected to the Linksys for print serving only.

The problem is that she is now constantly getting dropped from the internet. She cannot stay signed in to MSN Chat for example and downloads are basically impossible no matter how small. They all usually freeze somewhere along the line.

I am guessing there is something missing in my config somewhere but I can't figure it out for the life of me. HELP.

networks have so many variables. I assume you got the VPI/VCI correct of you wouldn't be connected. I suggest going to the basics. Use just the zoom and 1 computer. connect it, get it surfing, and see if it holds. On some dsl modems there is a check box to automatically keep connected and auto reconnect. Is that checked? Anyway, start at the basics so you can determine which device is having the problem. Hard to connect multiple devices and have some far away determine which one is the problem. Later... Mike

Thanks for the quick response. I just remembered one other thing. When I set it up, I used "Auto Configure" and it appeared to work.

Looking at it again last night I realized that it Auto Configured for PPPoE and I am wondering if that is the problem. I thought I read somewhere here that PPPoA is what we should be using.

Where can I find the best configuration document?

Yes, PPPOA is the way you should do the modem. VPI/VCI 0/32 . User name and password. Being you are also using an external router, linksys, I would give the linksys a static IP address from the Zoom. Then turn on the DMZ in the Zoom and point it to the static Ip you gave the linksys. The configuration is going to be similar to the actiontec. If you can, look at the actiontec and you can see what you need. Later... Mike....

Thanks Mike, I will do exactly that. I already have a static IP on the Linksys and have DHCP turned off on the Zoom but using a DMZ should fix the issue along with the PPPoA config.

Well, I tried switching to PPPoA but it hasn't changed anything in terms of dropping connection.

I have read some other boards where people are having similar problems. Basically any download over 1MB and it just stops between 50%-70%

I tried to configure the Zoom as both DMZ and Bridging but for the life of me I can't figure out how to do either on that thing. I have done it on Netgear equipment, I have done it on Linksys stuff and I have done it on Cisco stuff but this one baffles me.

And no, the Zoom manuals and/or website are NO help. Everything refers to clicking on a non-existant "Virtual Server" button that I simply cannot find. ANY assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried just the modem and a computer? Take the linksys and all other parts out of the equation. Let us know if it's still dropping you. Later... Mike....

I'm in Eugene OR and just started having the same issue. Everything has been fine up until yesterday and nothing has changed with my equipment (Actiontec modem). The Internet connection drops and reconnects about every 5-30 secs.
