Washington— DirecTV and EchoStar Communications have formed an alliance with Google, Intel, Yahoo and Skype to support a national licensing scheme in a pending federal auction of spectrum expected to raise at least $10 billion, according to a Federal Communications Commission filing the parties made last week.

Yes it does look like we are all going to bite the dust in about 3 years max. Even the large WISPs with plenty of customers can be taken out once the big guys can provide service almost anywhere under one ID. Anyone think differently?

WISP opportunities exist even where telcos are running CDMA voice/data services at 400Mhz.

But I recently interviewed with a new start-up that is designing SDR gear for any UHF TV band. They are very gung-ho on prospects of Google/Youtube or Skype/Joost driving a new global network using VSAT + UHF bands.
