Yup and the protectors that are on your DSL line don't even kick in until the voltage hits there 350-400 volts T/R T/G R/G. So as I posted you should add an Ethernet supressor between the modem and your switch. Trust me it's money well spent.

With a 7 volt breakdown IMO that is the correct way to go just be sure it is grounded well. We (BST) have been using the ONEAC model which internally is the same basic design and they have greatly reduced signal level (3-5 volts Ethernet DS1) damage at cell sites which are lightning magnets. Needless to say after seening that I added (out of my pocket not BST's parts) the same protection at home to my Ethernet over fiber broadband connections.

I have a similar setup. Except I have a cable modem and a Linksys RV082 router. I have both the cable modem and RV082 hooked up to a UPS. Where would I put one of those ethernet supressors - and what do they exactly do? Protect from nearby lightning strikes and voltage spikes/decreases?
