Ripper : The main difference between Adelphia and Comcast speeds is the caps.Adelphia had the caps way above the advertised speeds on down and upload,so you always would get above the advertised speeds on tests.On the other hand Comcast only has caps above advertised on download,so your upload speeds are always going to be lower than the advertised upload(without PowerBoost).Adelphia 384/4000=caps 463/4823, Comcast 384/6000= 384/6600.

RChris173 : Actually, I chnaged various settings, including my RWIN, and I was able to get speeds around ~15 mbps download with ~714 kbps upload on the 8mbps plan using the Atlanta server on speakeasy.

johndoe303 : That is just PowerBoost.. My issue is with my reported latency, powerboost peak speed, and Comcast phone representatives. My latency has been horrible ever since the transition and I hope it gets better with time. As for my peak speeds I see users in the area on the 8Mb tier seeing much higher peaks. My concerns are how I went from the top 99% of download speeds with Adelphia to mid/average with Comcast. Then there's the people at the call centers which I'd rather not get into. All I'll say is that I also hope they get better with time.

RR Conductor : I upgraded to the 8000/768 tier too, the best way is just to keep running the speed tests, if you have it you will see something like this (this is actually slow for me, I often see 16000-18000 down, but we've had a lot of congestion problems during peak hours and on weekends ever since Comcast came in)-

On the 8000 tier, anything above about 8800 is PowerBoost, I'm not sure on the upload, but probably around 900 and and above. I would try several tests from different sites, sometimes one test won't show it, but another will. One of the best is the OOL FTP test, watch the download rate, here's the link-

RR Conductor : Have you rebooted your modem? Sometimes that will do it, it did for me. We (Mendocino County, Northern California) got transitioned to Comcast from Adelphia about 3 weeks ago, and now have both upload and download powerboost, we're part of the Comcast North Bay Network.

RChris173 : I had 4 / 384 with Adelphia, then when I became "comcast", I got a new IP (76.110.*.*) and 6 / 384. That occured a few weeks ago. Then I called Comcast every day asking them if I could upgrade to the 8mbps plan. I called once per day until someone said the codes were available. Finally the code was available and he put it on my account.

It costs $10 more: $52.95 for 8mbps/786 up.

The auctual speed from speakeasy averages around ~7.6 down & 706 up.

Still no sign of powerboost :(

I am not sure what you mean.

Speed tests are subjective dependent on routing and backbone capacity, most of which fluctuates. While you now peer with San Jose, you may indeed be competing with more traffic to that test server. A direct route with LA and better peering can indeed show a better speed result.

Hope this clarifys what I was trying to say.

Edit-We're 170 miles north of San Jose, but that's Comcast's peering point for the North Bay (Sonoma, Marin, Napa, Mendocino Counties) network. I am sure they have others, but that's where all of our traffic seems to go from here.

Edit-Speeds right now are allover the place, 1500, 2300, 3800, 5800, 6200, back to 1800, crazy.

Yes, I get the same results to BBRreports but to Speedtest.net the numbers range from 200 to 1200!! It's weird because we are within a few miles of each other and I only get those high numbers going to that test site.

BTW...I get the same results if I bypass the router.

RR Conductor : We got our email and accounts transitoned this past weekend, and our network on Monday night here in Mendocino County in NorCal, and don't have PowerBoost yet either. I'm on the standard Tier-

I contacted Comcast, and they said PowerBoost "should" be here, and they also said the 8000 tier wasn't available here yet, so maybe they do have to roll it out in stages.

Bobby_Peru : The email change-over appears to have gone smoothly here in S-SW-Boca Raton too, though like fastracer , some very long-term account addresses had to be modified a bit.

Speed tests are next, once the email clients and firewall rules are all properly reset.

Well, I decided not to wait for the "official" email to change over my email address. Like you I was concerned that my 13 year old email name would not be available but it was and yes it went quite smoothly.

For those of you who have not made the switch, here is what the confirmation email looks like:

Your new Comcast email accounts are ready. Please be aware that it may take up to 24 hours for all of your existing email messages and contacts to fully transfer to your new Comcast account.

Also, the POP3 settings are:

They were routed to an out sourced center paid for by Comcast.

Seems like everyone wants to know this question...do we wait for the email or do it now? I could take the advice from my local office CSR I saw last week..he told me I can change my email last week! :o

Well I did it just minutes before I got the e-mail and all is fine here so I don't think any of you will have issue.

While on Adelphia I had a 24.49.xxx.xxx ip until Nov 2005, then became 69.163.xxx.xxx. I was transitioned off Adelphia to Comcast a couple of nites ago and now have 76.xxx.xxx.xxx.

Well I just spoke with a rep who claimed they recently had a meeting about this. He claimed that in this meeting they were told Adel 4MB customer will be upgraded to 6/768 for free and all current Adel Premiere 6/768 customers would stay the same (kind of). He then went on to tell me that they said in a few weeks time all old Adel Premiere 6/768 customers would be upgraded to 8/768 similar to service currently available in Martin County. When I asked about caps and pricing for premiere customers he gave me a phone number to some HSI management department where I've been on hold for a bit.

panth1 : Checking my modem logs, modem went out around 12 am and was back on in about 10 minutes this morning.

Received a new ip address and speeds are similar as they were before.

Pings are high at the ATT and Level 3 peering points though.

It is not off-topic the points being about AT&T break-up is that Comcast is dumping on customers in its 'normal' business processes that would have been illegal before deregulation and Comcast is providing/selling communication services. We should not even be aware that it is happening let alone aware and effected by it.

They've converted everything of ours over to Comcast (our email, account, etc. are all now Comcast), except the network, we're still on legacy Adelphia stuff with legacy Adelphia config files. It looks like our actual network will be the very last thing they convert, though I would've thought it was the first, strange.

In most cases this is true. If you are able to connect to the web with something other than the router then it would be logical that it is your equipment.

However this is the second time I have heard about a similar issue. Try cloning the Mac address of the router to the Mac address that can connect.

anon : I am an Adelphia customer now moved to Comcast in Boynton Beach. My Linksys Vonage router stopped working on 21 Mar 2007 and now continues to not work for neither VOIP telephoning nor internet surfing. Service call man came says that it is my problem. One can link view the internal network and see ip addresses, gateways etc., but not get to the internet. Of course Comcast maintains that it is my problem, although it has been working well for over a year and coincidentally they are 'transitioning' until (supposedly) worst-case date of 29 Mar 2007. On 10 Mar 2007 until 16 Mar 2007 it also was down. Also, supposedly my fault and then it magically started working after a service call technician 'adjusted' the splitter.

This is in Boynton Beach (Leisureville). Any others having trouble there? E.g. my phone lights on the router are out, but the internet light is on, although as mentioned above neither internet nor VOIP works. My neighbor just signed up for Comcast and never had Adelphia and he has been mostly ok, but not completely.

Back in the supposedly bad old days before Ronald Reagan screwed up the phone company via deregulation this kind of crap did not happen. One would have a doubled up system and then on changeover it would be a toggle over to the new system. It was also cheaper than today, so much for the actual benefits of the 'free market' when it is really just a 'free market' for the cronies.

It seems to me that there must be something amiss because nobody so far has posted the level of latency that I have and we are all using the same speed test site. You must know something I don't...so what is it??

Sure you got a new ip when you reset your modem?
Only reason I ask... notice the speedtest.net result for me - shows I am now 1300 mi from Ft Lauderdale while your test correctly shows ~50 mi, which is what the old Adelphia ip showed for me. (as Hob and Ripper explained earlier, zerostar's new ip from Stuart and my new ip reverse dns address probably has not been updated for the correct geography).

fwiw, when I did my 2am modem reset, actually shut down my modem, router and computer for a couple of minutes before restarting, not just a warm boot.
Dunno enough about this stuff to know for sure what's causing the difference though. Good Luck.

Those numbers are exactly what I use to get with an Adelphia IP. Rock solid numbers for years!!

yengec : Seeing how Ripper said "Stuart people got the transition", and then Joepwpb who is in West Palm Beach got transitioned, I think they are working this whole thing from North to South. Unless someone in Delray, Boynton or Lantana has been done earlier than today or yesterday I think folks at central and south Palm Beach County still have at least 1-2 more days to go.... And if so I'll probably be the last beause I am about 1500ft North of Broward/PB county line :)

This has been seen before.

The reverse DNS address of your IP is probably set to MO.

This will change in a couple of days.

This has been seen before.

joepwpb : I just got around to resetting the modem and router and then ran a few speed tests. I got 9122/368 at Speakeasy, 4547/362 at Adelphia, and on the d/l tests from OOL I got a range of 775-1150 kb/sec. The test from Speedtest.net was troubling because the 246ms latency was about what I got this morning.

I ran a trace using NeoTrace and it looks like hop3 changed to 73.230.131.1 but 4-7 look like old Adelphia IP's with 68.85.230.85, 68.86.165.150, 68.86.165.97, and 68.86.165.106.

I have yet to receive the official notice via email to proceed with the change of email address and reset of the modem.

I am in the Stuart, FL area.

Yeah that must be powerboost or it's temporary and yes most Comcast uploads are 384 unless they offer us the higher (select) tiers. The main ones are:

384 kbps / 384 kbps
4000 kbps / 384 kbps
6000 kbps / 384 kbps
8000 kbps / 768 kbps

Seems like down here we won't be seeing any better then 6Mb (which I had) until August-September.. If they don't honor my 768 upload I will actually lose speed because of the transition. Adelphia set our caps higher then advertised speed to try and help everyone achieve at least advertised speed. In most cases people saw much better (see my speed test above). After the transition Comcast will change my tier to 6/384 or maybe the select 6/768.. I won't even achieve those speeds because the cap will be set at advertised speed (lower). This is the reason you're only seeing 350kbps upload (your upload cap is now 384 kbps).

Comcast also has select area services with different speeds:

6000 kbps / 768 kbps
16000 kbps / 1000 kbps
16000 kbps / 2000 kbps

The only up side is even without the presence of FiOS we might be seeing 16/1 or 16/2 around August-September.. If we stick around.. :hmm:

joepwpb : Yes there were some changes this morning. First, my IP changed to 76.110.112.XXX from 69.167.218.XXX and my signal levels changed slightly. As far as speed tests, well they are all over the board except for the Upload which went from 450kb+ to less than 350kb. The speed test at Adelphia showed the same as usual download but Speedtest.net showed 6600kb/s and Speakeasy showed 11288. All this occurred without cycling my modem or Router, which I will do later today.

As migration dates get nearer there are a number of "go, No go" decisions right up to an hour before the start.

Ripper : The speeds are the same in PB county as the rest of the Adelphia areas.They never had a 512 upload,Adelphia provisions the caps higher than the advertised speeds,thus the higher test speeds.

If you live in the palm beach county area your speeds are 4000/512 not 4000/384

fastracer : Still waiting for any news also...I spoke to Comcast 2 weeks ago and they said "it should be done in March" but no exact dates. I also emailed them...repsonse was "we can not give an ETA at this time".
I still remember speaking to a Adelphia tech that came by the house in Sept. 06 and he told me he had good word we would be fully transtioned by Nov. 2006!! Maybe he meant NOV.2007!!!
So we wait some more.
