To get to 100 million by end of 2008, Sprint has to roll Wimax out in those areas where broadband is already heavily concentrated. This is unfortunate, because though economically sound, it is not reaching those areas where Wimax can have the most impact - areas where broadband options are scarcer.
Not really. By the time WiMAX is widespread, it's not going to be a Cable/DSL replacement, it's going to likely wind up being an EVDO/HSPDA replacement. Lower price, lower latency, cheaper to deploy and the biggest reason ... it'll be integrated into pretty much every Intel laptop chipset.

So it makes perfect sense for Sprint to deploy it in the markets where they will recoup their investment the quickest.

WiMax will be an EVDO/HSDPA replacement when it is ready to do the following:

1. Become mobile WiMax (i.e. perform handoffs between WiMax sites)
2. Interoperate with EVDO/HSDPA/WiFi for handoffs (WiMax is more sparce than HSDPA, and doesn't handoff to anything currently)
3. Build true mobile handsets.

I do agree that Sprint should be 'picking the low hanging fruit' where they can get the biggest bang for the buck.

I would personally only use a service like this if I new that the areas I needed to use it were completely covered, and WiMax had failover to 1x/EVDO or EDGE/HSDPA where there wasn't coverage. For $55/month, I don't think I'm asking too much.
