Microsoft were somewhat pro-piracy of their OS back in the old days. They weren't so much concerned with making money from sales as establishing an install base. They wanted people using their OS so they'd be less likely to use anything else.

Moreso than DOS, their main ripoff was Windows from OS/2. Microsoft even had people working on OS/2 for IBM - evidently Gates realised this was the way of the future and began his own competing OS. You can add conflicts of interest to Microsoft's list of offenses.
