| [FP] Equipment for parkut's Foldy
I have some extra blades that I would like to donate to our new? operator.
4- MSI K8MM-V motherboards each fitted with an Athlon 64 3700 socket 754 cpu, along with heatsink and fan.
Not sure how the new systems will be run, but I have two harddrives from Foldy 9 that are not in use.
Hope this is not "jumping the gun", but thought we could get a start on the hardware discussion. -- My Foldy Monitor, My Weather Page , |

1 edit | That is a wonderful offer, Tom, and one that I am sure will greatly help in getting our new op started!
It would be good to get some input as to what the FP has at its disposal, and what folks would like to do to set up these blades.
parkut , please feel free to offer any ideas that you may have.
Jim, what is the best equipment that the FP has that isn't running now? You likely know better than anyone what we have at this point that is compatible with Tom's hardware.

1 edit | reply to tstolze That's a nice all in one board, has onboard video and memory. »www.msicomputer.com/product/p_sp···class=mb
If the project were to allow me to operate them, about the only thing I might need to make them run is memory. According to the picture, it's a 20 pin power supply. I have PSUs, HD's cables, etc. Blades will be setup with hard drives and will run linux, probably CentOS.
Specs hint board can be picky about memory
Main Memory Supports two 184-pin DDR SDRAMs up to 2GB memory size Supports DDR400*/DDR333/DDR266 DDR SDRAM (*Refer to MSI recommended modules) Note: PC3200 (DDR400) maximum 4 banks (2 double-sided) only
Due to the High Performance Memory design, motherboards or system configurations may or may not operate smoothly at the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) standard settings (BIOS Default on the motherboard) such as DDR voltage, memory speeds and memory timing. Please confirm and adjust your memory setting in the BIOS accordingly for better system stability.
Example: Kingston HyperX DDR500 PC4000 operates at 2.65V, 3-4-4-8, CL=3. For more information about specification of high performance memory modules, please check with your Memory Manufactures for more details.

| That does sound like an excellent start, and beats any of the remaining AMD2400+ that are not running.
I don't know when I'll have time to inventory these old AMDs, but I really don't wish them on anyone. Unless they really really want them - a couple seem troublesome. -- Jim -- USA2K SEE: REBEKAH VoIP since 12/2002, Packet8 since 12/2006. Vonage as backup. |

So is this moving forward? The wish of the donator is compatible with the theme of FP, and seems agreeable to parkut , so I would expect debate is moot.

Returning for the moment to the memory required to put these boards into production.
All in one boards reserve a portion of system memory for the onboard video, reducing the amount left for the operating system and programs.
What is the minimum and/or recommended memory configuration for FAH? I have tested FAH with 256 meg linux systems, and they seem to crunch fine.
For this motherboard, would you see any difference between two sticks of matched memory, or a single stick?
And, in general, would you see much of a performance difference between DDR400 and DDR333?
Just thinking ahead for the day when someone will be given the opportunity to run these boards. |

| Since the boards are socket 754 they do not run memory in DDR mode. So either way will run just fine. I was running them with 512, that way I could request large WU's. -- My Foldy Monitor, My Weather Page , |

2 edits | We will need to ask Sarah how much money we have- we spent a lot lately.
Tom, can we still run with 512 on those boards at this point? I am aware that 1G is best, but I am also aware that the FP is relatively low on funds. What is the best bang for the buck at this point? May be about the same cost anyway...
I would see it as practical to get the parts for these four blades all accounted for, and ship 'em to parkut ... it makes the most sense that they go together, and parkut will be fine with Linux.
Addendum: Sarah says that we have a little over $700 in the FP treasury at this time. -- "Little one, I would like to see anyone -- prophet, king or god -- persuade a thousand cats to do anything at the same time." Orange Cat, Neil Gaiman. |

| reply to tstolze I've always been partial to Crucial Memory due to their no hassle warranty policy, but Crucial's system configurator doesn't list this motherboard.

512 will be fine at this point, the only reason I have gone to 1 gig on some systems is because of running dual core processors... -- My Foldy Monitor, My Weather Page , |

| reply to mouseferatu That looks like a good price.
I wonder if they are automatically discounted, or its a mail-in rebate with limitations?
Half a Gig on most, a Gig on dual core seems a safe bet. 128 and 256 seem to be OK but likely RAM prices are good enough to not be too stingy. -- Jim -- USA2K SEE: REBEKAH VoIP since 12/2002, Packet8 since 12/2006. Vonage as backup. |

DDR does not have an advantage being paired - is that what you meant? EDIT: I see that is what you meant - 1 stick is great. -- Jim -- USA2K SEE: REBEKAH VoIP since 12/2002, Packet8 since 12/2006. Vonage as backup. |

| As it turned out I needed to order some other stuff (yeah, right), and what do you know, some of the memory MstrBlstr mentioned ended up in my shopping basket. Before you know it, my finger clicked the button!
Well, I'm sure I can use the memory somewhere.... Hmmm, I wonder what I could do with four sticks of memory... |
