Is there a way to format proof a hard drive?

Is there a way to make a hard drive not be formatted by a typical windows CD? Just curious....

Thanks for any responses!

You can unplug the cables from it.

A Windows CD is just one thing, there is also bootable Linux CDs and bootable partitioning utilities from other companies. No OS can protect you from that, you will need to look into physically securing the hardware.

How about a popup or a flash message in the BIOS? Something like before formatting this drive, please call 555-1234?

You could disable boot from CD in the BIOS.

What are you actually trying to protect against?

If you're in a position to format the drive, you could also overwrite it, delete everything on it, etc., all of which result in the same loss of information.

Why the fixation on 'formatting' in particular?

And under what circumstances?

I actually do follow the 'unplug the cables' advice in some cases - e.g., when working on a PC with multiple disks, and it's imperative I really don't make any typing errors in maintenance programs, then I will disconnect precious disks.

I do the same during any reformat. All my important data stays on separate drives. To protect against accidental data loss those drives get unplugged.
