Not necessarily, I got mine yesterday and so far I love it. You can have one master computer to sync to and 5 other computers to stream from, so just sync the content you want from your upstairs computer to it and you will have your content. What I also like is that it doesn't power off, it goes to sleep so startup is instant. It also can resume movies/tv shows/podcasts/etc.. once you have started watching it on your computer or ipod. What I also like is that once I watch something on my apple tv it marks it as viewed on my itunes (whether streaming or syncing) library which will then remove it from my ipod once I sync the ipod. Essentially, it really is just a big ipod video. I am using it with my Samsung 1080p LN-S4095D TV but have not tried any HD content yet, only some itunes tv shows, trailers and music videos, they were basically TV quality, not to bad but not great. I have some DVD content being converted right now via visualhub and well test it out tonight. -- How can we force democracy down the throats of other nations under the sword when we are not a Democracy? |

1 edit | reply to hyperjoe No you dont, the @Tv sync's up to it. If that exceeds 40 gigs then you have to pick and choose a bit.
You have 3-4 different options.
One iTunes syncs up as the master. Then you're free to connect to any device running itunes in the house and view it's content.
For the master sync for movies and tv shows it can be told to sync a few different ways. Full, unwatched, last x amount. etc etc. It's a lot more managable than my iPod.
Personally I like it. I'm trying to figure out if 5.1 surround works on these. From the Handbrake guys so far it's a yes. Although it appears that Apple may never have encoded the 5.1 sound into their movies.
Edit: oh it's been hacked, 120 gig drive on gizmodo, and another group hacked in a plugin for full xvid and a ssh server (dropbear).

I could probably get this thing running a lot more than they're doing in a day or so.. Who wants to donate one ..
The guys on that forum seem to not have very much OS X experience (especially with kexts or imaging the system)

| reply to Johnny Awesome.
For a "closed system" from a "closed company" they left a lot of stuff just wide open and swingin' in the breeze.
So it's a mini with a tiny processor and frontrow+steroids for $300.
And it's got USB, so I could imagine someone throwing EyeTV on there... |

Yep, the USB driver is in there, and they are able to sense command-S and Verbose mode, but that is probably the firmware doing that, not the USB kext in the I/O kit. Last I checked they could get to the Darwin command line but a keyboard wasn't recognized at that point.
SSH and VNC work, so they can do it that way, and eventually get a USB driver going.
They faked up the Xvid by using Perian and fooling QuickTime into loading a QT reference movie that actually pointed to an Xvid file rather than a .mov file.
Or just load a whole Tiger image on there and be done with it.
Note that Apple calls the OS "Mac TV OS".
Within a week I think they will have a one-click solution for Perian - the lead Perian developer was posting there and he is going to help out.
Apple shouldn't care what people do with this thing - if it is easy and free to add on Perian and support all formats, then Apple doesn't have to support it and they don't have to fiddle with licensing. With that flexibility, the Apple TV will easily be the best unit out there.
I see a simple app on the Mac sending an Appleevent to the Mac TV which will trigger the changes needed to install the support for Perian. The Mac TV OS runs as root, so it should be able to do anything it is told. |
