said by cypherstream :So this costs 400 million to take out the analog headend? What are they getting paid, $200,000 an hour? The digital is already in place right? So wouldn't you just have to physically remove the analog modulators and replace them with digital qam's as needed? I don't know what that figure includes, but STBs for every analog customer, the service calls for every customer, the marketing to help the customer 'understand' why should subscribe to digital cable, or why they new a new box....all adds up. |

2 edits | reply to CableTool I found this thread most disturbing. I like not needing needing a STB to view cable. So, currently I get Limited Basic, Expanded Basic, and, Internet.
If my area looses the Expanded Basic, I am tempted to just cut back to Limited Basic any try to pick up Spanish on the Telemundo channel. However, the wife would object to this plan.
Isn't there something in the works for newer TV's to decode digital channels ? I thought I heard something about it, but, Comcast was trying for an exemption.
Thanks... Tom |

If you have a newer tv with a QAM tuner, you will pick up any unencrypted digital channel, no box required. On my system, all expanded basic channels are unencrypted along with HD versions of OTA channels. Any expanded basic channel that has been removed from analog is still available on a QAM-enabled digital tv.
Of course if you have an STB, you can get them as well. |

This QAM tuner option is starting to make sense to me. I picked up a Comcast Channel Lineup for my area and see there are several chnnels in the digital area that are marked as Limited Basic including some over the air HD channels. |

@xnet.com | Its official... in 60614 I am down to 28 channels, mostly locals and access. No news channels unless you count CLTV. I think maybe FX is the only survivor. |

Will the digital box being provided by Comcast be dual tuner?

I just want to know if the expanded basic will be transmitted in clear QAM. I have a Mythtv box and don't want to shell out the cash for a STB for each tuner that I have. |

@uchicago.edu | I just got a DCT-700 for my analog TV (I have 3416 for my HDTV). I asked if the box had s-video. "Of course it does!" And of course it doesn't.
Is there another simple set top box Comcast offers that has s-video out? |

| reply to CableTool I just noticed that I am now receiving DTV directly from the cable in Naperville, Illinois including the HD versions of the Chicago broadcast stations. I have had an HD set (with QAM tuner) for over about a year now, but we have never received HD signals without using the Comcast box (3412). Will this be the new basic service including all DTV broadcast channels? We also receive all the expanded basic channels over the cable as well, but I believe they are still analog. Doug |

Quite possibly a DCT-2500 series box might have it, but it was a factory installed option, so no definite. A lot of area's are only leasing DCT-700's now and have extinguished their inventory of DCT-2000's and 2500's. |
