noping posted : Problem solved. Yesterday (yet another) technician came out, took a look at the BBU in the basement - apparently, it had been wired incorrectly by the last guy on Saturday during the 610 ONT -> 611 ONT replacement.

Wiring was redone properly at the BBU, the ONT replaced with a new one (tech: "the improper wiring may have caused damage to the ONT"). Now everything works properly, no more intermittent service outages, and I have working VOD.

Hooray.

noping posted : Not sure. It just went out an hour ago, then came back up fifteen minutes ago - not paying much attention to the lights on the ONT (flashing power LED that says that it's running off the battery) since it's installed outside. BBU has always remained green and the "using battery" light hasn't turned on, so that doesn't seem like a great indicator to go by.

I'm not exactly sure how to pull the battery on this newer-looking BBU, much less get to the actual battery. Should be pretty much the same process after I figure out how to remove the housing, no? If I pulled the battery entirely would TV/internet still work?

JohnA posted :
When my 610 got good power again, it would take 4-5 minutes for the internet to come back. Was it more or less than that, when everything came back? ie: If it's down @10 minutes, it could be showing battery on the BBU for 5 minutes till it drops, switch back to system on the BBU, but still not come up for another 5 minutes.

I'd try disconnecting the battery, and see what happens, but then there's no one here that would want to kill me if it went down and stayed down. I don't think I'd wait till Wednesday either.

noping posted : And just like that, internet and TV are back up - BBU is still green, but the "Power" LED on the ONT isn't flashing anymore.

Guess I'll have to live with it being like this until someone comes out on Wednesday. I'm starting to wonder if I should move POTS back over to copper (since it wasn't physically removed).

[northeast] Losing internet, TV services

noping posted : /rant

Yesterday, Verizon sent out a tech to replace the 610 ONT as I was having issues with Video on Demand streams and normal TV showing signs of "tiling" and audio problems. (see here)

Everything was fine yesterday after the ONT swap. VOD was working properly, normal TV was fine, internet was perfect (as always). I even finally got around to writing a poorly--written and hastily-thrown-together review of the service.

Now, today, I'm losing TV and internet service intermittently. Internet service will suddenly drop and the TVs will go completely black. Calling the FSC, they told me that they couldn't get a proper signal from the ONT ("we think the ONT is running off the BBU, it's very likely the ONT isn't being fed enough power, it's a problem that you have to deal with") and want to send yet another technician out - in addition to possibly charging me for the service call. The "supervisor" that I spoke with continued to stress that last point and gave me a hard time when I couldn't tell him the exact color that the BBU light was giving off - well, excuse me for being terrible with colors.

Nothing with the house's electrics have changed in the past, oh, say, twelve years or so, and the only thing that has changed since last week (when I had fully-working internet service, semi-working TV service) has been the ONT, BBU that were changed out yesterday. Doesn't that raise a huge red flag as to what the problem might be?

On another note, my service went out again for a short time while trying to post this. Lovely.
