| A little of both... The Old Times Square was part of the old New York City, dirt filth and grime, and seediness.
The new T.S. is the cleaner safer friendly N.Y.C..
Old N.Y.C. gave it it's reputation as a rough and tumble city. New N.Y.C. seems to be softer, which is nice and all, but sometimes I miss the "shadiness" that I grew up in. -- There is no such thing as a stupid question, and yes, the camel types. |

| reply to CPM said by CPM :Do any of you miss the old Times Square? or do you like the new one better? I would prefer something in between. The area was a dangerous mess but now looks like a suburban mall. I never imagined Toy R' Us, Red Lobster, Fridays, Olive Garden, Planet Hollywood, Skecher's, Swatch etc... being in Times Square. I wonder how many tourists eat at the chains vs. walking a couple of blocks to eat on restaurant row.
I have worked in the area for over 20 years so I know both the old and the new. It is like an amusement park for tourists now. Other than seeing a Broadway show, I almost never go to Times Square. I can find everything except the shows at a mall on Long Island.
My last trip to Greenwich Village was a disappointment. It has also lost a great deal of it's old character. It's unfortunate because the village was never dangerous like Times Square and had a uniqueness that was good. It is now also going down the chain store route. -- 'Some men look at things the way they are and ask why? I dream of things that are not and ask why not? Robert Kennedy

| reply to sheik28 The shadiness is more out in the open Like Starbucks,Disney's ,etc.:) I prefer the old Times Square (1950's) because thats where many of my good memories come from.My uncle use to take us kids on adventures on Sundays. The penny arcades were fun. We would walk for hours and see and do many things. Nedicks was a favorite stop for the best hotdog I ever had.(a toasted buttered bun with a large hotdog They had a regular frank but nothing like the large one). And a orange drink that was very tasty(but probably pure crap). The large pretzels seemed much fresher and better tasting. Life was good!,but then I grew up.:) |

| reply to CPM I guess im too young to really remember the old time square except for very vague impressions. I would like to have seen it.
The new Times Square is okay but very touristy and it has way to many people for me. -- Mass Transit Sucks! |

| reply to Fishead1 OH BOY! The Times Square of the 50's (and even before) was unique. Life was good back then. And yes, we all grew up. Writing about Nedicks. I always stopped at the one in GCT before heading towards the train to New Haven. Their hot dogs were good esp. on the buttered toasted bun. But still prefer Nathans. -- Train Yourself To Relax...Ride The New Haven Railroad! Weather or No...Go New Haven! The New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad Co.:1872-1968. | reply to Maccawolf You didn't know that? They started pushing the "Clinton" moniker even before I arrived in NYC in 2000. I temped at the office of a RE developer in the west 50's for a while, and I kid you not, there were actually people referring to the area between Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen as "Chelsea Clinton". -- "Being miserable and treating other people like dirt is every New Yorker's God-given right." | reply to CPM Before '70 it was great, then it sucked, then after Rudy's clean up it became better, but not pre-seventies great. Best part about Times Square now is the money being put in by tourists. I work at 1633 Broadway and can hardly walk fast around here because the sidewalks are full of tourists.

| reply to Maccawolf Times Square before the decline in the 60's was great. Now, it's cleaned up and now a tourist area. For us old timers, it's not the same. But better now then when it was in decline. If we could only turn the clock back to the late 40's and early 50's. -- Train Yourself To Relax...Ride The New Haven Railroad! I have an affection for the Times Sqauare of the 60's.. oh MAN... it was great. Now, it's Disneyland, all clean and (as they say on the toilet seats in motel rooms) "sanitized for your protection". I'm not sure that's always a good thing. |

| I don't really remember the times square of the 60s much, but the 70s and 80s was fine by me. After all, the pimps and pushers had to dwell somewhere, and they never bothered ME. -- "The most affectionate creature in the world is a WET dog"---- Ambrose Bierce |
